Well I gotta put my .02 in here. I do know a couple Shipmates of mine that had nissens done while I was in the Navy. They were good to go afterwards. That was one of the reasons I was confident about
my decision to have the surgery.
I would find a good GI doc and get the testing that needs to be done before you should have the surgery. Then if you still are dependent on the meds to control the acid I would find the best surgeon in your area that does the surgery or if you can swing it find one out of town if there are none close. Discuss the surgery with him/her and see if they believe they can successfully do your surgery. If everything points towards a good outcome, go for it! If you are a good candidate and have a surgeon who can do these successfully there really aren't any side effects. None that are permanent anyway. Most of what people see as side effects are just part of the healing and adjustment period.
I started to have problems when I was 18 and in the Navy. I wish I would have known more about
this then, but then again that was 22 years ago.
My son has reflux as did I at his age, but he has really good control of it with meds. As soon as he can't control it anymore he said he is gonna look into the surgery.
Take care,
Bill
