Do I even have reflux? I wonder...

Last couple of months I've been having quite troublesome bouts with a choking sensation in my throat. I was convinced that it was due to reflux (a Barrium Swallow said I had GERD several years ago). But on Monday, my doctor did a scope, and said their was absolutely nothing wrong with my stomach, esophagus, or throat.

No hernia, no inflammation...nothing.

In fact, the only thing he did find worth mentioning was that my stomach was in a "weird" position, but as far as he was concerned, it was a non-issue. This has got me wondering if the choking sensation is all in my head. I mean, if reflux was making it's way all the way back into my throat, you'd think their would be SOME physical evidence of it...right?

Thoughts?

not always. most people with GERD have normal endoscopies, and the term non erosive reflux disease (NERD) has been termed. I was recently told this is probably what I have, and what the majority of people with reflux have...at least one person I know of on the forum even went ahead with surgery despite her endoscopies looking normal...

I have had 1 normal gastroscopy and 1 not normal gastroscopy - on each occasion I had the exact same set of symptoms on the exact same medication!

NERD huh? And here I thought that term wouldn't apply to me anymore since I graduated high school, lol.

But seriously, I guess reflux without erosion would make sense. My problems have always been more due to an uncomfortable pressure in my chest than burning. I'm having that test where they cram a tube down your nose done in mid-November. Hopefully that will provide a little more insight.

Hey there and welcome to HealingWell.  With NERD, patients experience typical GERD symptoms caused by acid reflux, but they do not have visible esophageal injury.

Treatment for NERD is similar to that for erosive GERD. Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment may involve one or more of the following lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery.

Your out of school and now you may belong to the NERD category........ devil .  There are a lot of awesome people just like you.
