Had fundoplication 12 months ago and vomited yesterday

Hi

Just looking for anyone who can help.

I had a laparoscopic fundoplication 12 months ago. Had very little problems and just a few flare ups of producing excess saliva.

However, wasnt feeling too well yesterday and I vomited 3 times.

It was just liquid.

My concern is my surgeon advised I wouldnt be able to vomit after my op, so Im wondering if this is normal or a sign something is wrong.

Any advice would be welcome.

I don’t think you need to be concerned. I was told that it was possible for some to vomit if you were sick, but you may want to check with your doctor.
However if everything else is fine I wouldn’t worry at all.

"Vomiting is often difficult or even impossible with a fundoplication. In some cases, the purpose of this operation is to correct excessive vomiting. However, when its purpose is to reduce gastric reflux, difficulty in vomiting may be an undesired outcome. Initially, vomiting is impossible; however, small amounts of vomit may be produced after the wrap settles over time, and in extreme cases such as alcohol poisoning or food poisoning, the patient may be able to vomit freely"

Don't worry I've vomited violently all night 9 months after my surgery and several times since then and I'm still intact.

Hi Coll,

I also was told I wouldn't be able to vomit, and was able to. I had a stomach bug at about 1 year post op and 2 and a half years post op.  I didn't have any trouble as a result, so relax.  It's really in the very early months that the risk is greatest.

I would caution you, though. If you don't have nausea drugs, be sure to get them.  The problem is that if you're vomiting you won't be able to keep them down, so I would recommend the Zofran that dissolves under your tongue, or Compazine supposatories. 

That way if you do vomit, you can take it immediately (or before, when you start feeling nauseous) and keep from repeated vomiting episodes.  Although you can vomit, it's still desirable to keep from over-stressing your wrap.  Some stomach bugs are quite severe and you could vomit for hours.  That would be something to avoid if you can.

Glad to hear you can vomit!  It's definitely an advantage.

Thanks for the reply. Its reassuring as I have been worried of when the time would come when I would need to vomit.

I feel much better after being sick and hopefully wont happen again for while.

This forum is so good as we all seem to get told different things to expect from the surgery.

I certainly dont regret having it done.

Being able to live without constant acid and bloatedness is like having a new life.

Couldn't eat anything before without blowing up like a balloon.

Unless you've suffered from GERD its hard to appreciate how bad it is and I wish anyone luck in going for this op and hope its successful.

Hi Coll,

You're so right.  This forum provides lots of great information from people who've lived the recovery.  Unfortunately, I've found that surgeons generally don't provide much preparation.  I don't know if they're concerned about scaring their patients, or just genuinely don't know what it's like.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience post-op.  I've been happy with my results as well.  There are so many scary stories out there that it's good to have contact with people with good things to say.
