Hi lgjproduct,Welcome to the Healing Well Wrapped Club! You're just a little over two weeks post op, which is very, very, very early in the healing stage. This surgery takes a full 6 months for the majority of healing to be complete, and a full year for the rest. I even found some fine tuning taking place into my second year. It sounds to me as if you're overdoing with your eating.
I also had my Nissen for breathing issues. I already had asthma, and the reflux caused my lungs to become very unhealthy. I was doing nebulizer treatments several times a day during the last year, and my lungs were bad for over 5 years before my surgery. I was also on unhealthy doses of steroids.
You are about 2 weeks post-op and your wrap is now at peak swelling. I always tell people (as my surgeon did me) that after surgery your swallowing will get progressively worse during the first two weeks, peaking around 14 days. That would explain why you're having to move back to soft foods and soups. This is to be expected, so don't worry. Once the swelling begins to subside you'll be back in business again.
It took my lungs about two and a half months to respond to the surgery. It was amazing how much better they got, seemingly overnight.
Like you, my surgeon turned me loose to eat regular food. His caveat was that I only eat foods that could be chewed to a liquid. (Also, no bread (untoasted), sandwiches, or steak) Small bites and chew, chew, chew. I had my surgery 3 years ago, and although I can eat absolutely anything I want, I still have to eat more slowly and chew my food thoroughly. The wrap that was created to hold acid in your stomach also makes it harder to get food through it. That's why you'll want to chew it thoroughly.
Here's a link to my recovery journal. It only takes you to about Day 19, but you'll get an idea of what someone elses's recovery was like. https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=45&m=2183443
Hang in there...things will improve over time. If you can surrender to your recovery and follow it where it takes you, you'll do much better. Those who struggle against what is have a lot more trouble.
Glad you've joined us! I'm sure others will be by to weigh in on the subject and offer you more support.
You're definitely in the right place!
Take care,
Denise
