What kind of doctor shall I see for a burning of the mouth?

Ok, so I went to see my ENT today. He looked at my mouth and throat and said it looked fine....

I was kind of at ease but also there's still no solution to the pains I'm feeling.

I scheduled a second opinion ENT at the end of the month in hope for more answers.

I do think this is something more than GERD/LPR.

I've read only a few others with the same symptoms and I believe we are getting misdiagnosed. We even went as far as having Nissen done. But still we feel what we feel. I think I read Marcello's post recently about a failed Nissen. I don't believe our Nissen's failed but just it might be something else we are dealing with here.

I know I can wait and ignore it and see if in time it will get better but I'm past a month post op...... things should've been getting better no

One thing I see from most of your posts is your quest to hurry up and recover. If you have read any of the posts here you should remember that the recovery for this surgery is a long one and you would do well to try your best to relax into the recovery and flow with it not against it. You cannot rush the recovery after this surgery. You have had Major adjustments to the inside of your body. Your intestines, liver esophagus, stomach and I don't know what else has been pushed, moved, lifted, pulled and sewn. You are not going to recover from this in a month or 2 or even 6. The biggest part of your healing will take 6 months, then it will continue up to and through 1 year. You will probably always have to thoroughly chew your food (as should be done anyway, but most people do not do it).
Please do not be impatient, you will be surprised how quickly time passes and recovery comes about if you are patient.

I believe Denise had a great thought.. you should check out an insufficiency as she noted. If you are not sure of he diagnosis or lack of, that the ENT gave you, by all means you should pursue another avenue and physician. This may be something that has nothing to do with the Nissen, just happened right after the procedure.

Please try to relax and don't rush your recovery.. take it easy and enjoy the fact that you may see improvement in a much shorter time than it took to get to where you were before the surgery.

Thanks for the response. A quick question, how soon did you return to your physical activities after surgery like exercise. I've been walking and even slight jogging which my surgeon said was ok after 3 weeks post op. He even said it was ok to work out with my resistance bands. Just don't do heavy lifting which I don't. Thanks.

I would ask to see a dermatologist, as they do inside mouth as well as outside. Also ask for blood tests to rule out iron, folic and B12 deficiency.

A dermatologist could help detect any allergy causing irritation of the mouth and lips. There's something called Oral Allergy Syndrome but I think the symptoms are more acute and arise in response to things like peanut or certain fruits.

I would definitely ask if you have been tested for anaemia and ask to have haematinics done (B12 and folate and iron stores).

If you have a competent primary care physician, I would think that he/she would be the first person to see.  They look at the whole YOU, and can guide you in the right direction.  Sometimes you can begin specialist hopping and it can be quite unfulfilling, and can waste a lot of time and money. 

If you don't have a good PCP, it's time to try to find one.  In my opinion the primary care doc is critical because he/she have an overall understanding of your body and health.  That is the person to ask regarding what your next move should be.

I do have to find a good pcp, mine was at a total lost of my situation with the GERD/LPR. He was like....people with GERD are not as bad as you are......that already was a red flag.

Start asking around...try to find a good PCP.  I think it's the most critical part of good health care.  Ask for recommendations.  A PCP has the ability to pull together all the different specialists' opinions and can help you figure out what's going on.  A good PCP will guide you through the medical system and run interference for you.  A good PCP is interested in YOU, not your "parts". 

It's like the blind men and the elephant.  Each specialist sees through the prism of his/her own specialty.  A primary care doc sees you as a whole person.

Find one!

Please remember I am not a Dr. and cannot dx but I have read of a condition known as Burning Mouth Syndrome.  If you have pain or soreness of your tongue, lips, gums or other areas of your mouth, see your doctor or dentist. They may need to work together to help pinpoint a cause and develop an effective treatment plan.
