How soon after a Nissen's fundoplication can you have another?

So far the shortest timeframe I've read about is one year (I think it might have been someone on this forum).

Has anyone heard of people having another done sooner? I'm talking electively, eg due to unsuccessful first op, as opposed to urgent/emergency operations because of complications (which can be done anytime).

Or if anyone knows surgeons who have minimum timeframes for a re-do, I'd love to hear about that.

I've had a redo 5 months after my first. Three nissens done within a year. I wouldn't recommend my surgeon though!

Michelle, may I ask how did you have a second Nissen's after only 5 months? Was it simply that the first wasn't working or were there complications that necessitated a re-do that early?

It was thought my first was too loose. My surgeon tightened it but it didn't help so he did a redo again.

That's sounds like my situation at present - just after 1st Nissen, seems that it's too loose as I'm still refluxing.

Please tell me, which of the investigations (manometry, 24-ph, barium swallow, endoscopy) did he do after the 1st and what was the 2nd op like to go through compared with the first? Were you aware it was tighter right away? Was the dysphagia worse when it was tighter?

I know I'm bombarding you with Q's, but I feel like I'm in a similar situation!

Thats ok! Its good to be knowledgable. I had an EGD and a barium swallowed that showed reflux. I didn't notice any difference in recovery with any of my 3. I had no symptoms for about 3 to 4 weeks post op. I believe I started refluxing again once the swelling went down. I could feel it was tight, I would have pressure at the wrap if I took too big of a bite. I get the same effect when I have a scope. I get relief for a day or two after.

Interesting, your story gives me hope! How long did it take before you 'could' take big bites/steak etc? Or is that still an issue?

Also, did they have to convert to open procedure in any of your subsequent ops or were all laparoscopic?

I didn't have any issues eating or things getting stuck. I know they recommend to wait a while for soft bread and steak but I lived off sandwiches from about 3 months on. All of mine were lap. They used the same incisions every time.

What are your current symptoms post op?
How many days are you post op?
What did your surgeon say regarding your post op symptoms?

I am 36 days post op....I still have my burning throat/mouth symptoms. My stomach pains are almost gone though. I don't understand how's that's possible. I thought it was all linked. I'm seeing a dermatologist tomorrow to check my mouth. Maybe it could be from something else. I'm currently taking a b-complex vitamin as I heard vitamin deficiency can be linked to a burning mouth.

Why do these threads always just lead to dead ends ? What happened to Marcello ? Did he heal no ? I am 4 months post op for LPR and only mild improvement. I am back on PPI, 1x daily Dexilant and if I don't take it I have heartburn. Pretty straightforward that my wrap has failed I think. I have a surgeon evaluating me tomorrow.

On a side note I find this forum very frustrating, people post their pain and than just disappear. What the heck is happening to them ?

Anyone know Marcello's story, did he get fixed?

The truth is that they probably got their situation figured out, and are living their lives. Once you're busy with life, it's easy to forget about every thread you wrote in a forum.

Please start your own topic, as you are responding to a thread that is over 5 years old. Most of the people that had posted replies haven't been active on the Forum in 4 or 5 years. The threads have not been very active lately. It's always better to wait and see what advice you get from your surgeon.
