Had Nissen surgery done on monday the 26th having chest pain days after.

Ok so I couldn't take it any longer, had all the tests done and schedule surgery.

Had the surgery done on Monday morning, was in the hospital for a night.

come home tuesday afternoon, was ok, sore and stuff and some pain in my shoulders, really bad headache due to the pain meds and stuff.

wasn't too bad on wednesday, was on the liquid diet.

well on Thursday i started to get the same kind of chestpain i've been dealing with, it would come and go throughout the day and then late at night i was getting it bad i had to get up and walk around cause it was driving me crazy, i looked some stuff up online, and came to the conclusion the same pain can be caused by the swollen esophagus or some irritation yet from teh surgery, well early friday morning i still had pain, and it eventually subsided, had a little again friday night but it wasn't bad.

Today saturday it was light pain, came and go, and some stomachaches which i guess is normal.

Well again now for about an hour or so i've been having bad pain again.

Is this really normal for it to come and go like that?

I barely eat anything right now.   I'm very frustrated, i'm on pain meds but they don't seem to do anything for the chest pain just the other pains.

I hope to god this is normal and i don't need further garbage done, i don't have another appointment until the 12th of april.

hey thanks for the fast reply, just feels hopeless with this amount of pain again, ready to pull my hair out.

yeah i've been dealing with the shoulder pain as well, only been on liquids except for maybe some really watery coco-wheats which went down easier then pudding.

but yeah i'm sur ei'll be here often i have off work for 6 weeks because of the weight restrictions i wouldn't be able to do anything at work.

Please take heart of Denise's advice.. I was wrapped 1 year ago today and Denise and the Gang here helped me through this thing called recovery... I do not know what I would have done without them... surely not as well as I have..
The best advice I can give you is please relax into your recovery. Don't push it, the recovery will go very smoothly if you will just flow with what your body accepts and listen to it when it says NO! Once you hit the 2 week mark you will realize that day by day things are beginning to go better.As Denise said, your insides have been lifted, pushed, pulled, cut, stitched and wrapped.. it is going to take time for the inside to heal.. the outside will be healed and look great in a few weeks but, please do not over do it. Listen to your body and you can't go wrong.

Please remember that everyone here will be here for you to talk to. We welcome you to share with us your pain, fear, frustration and above all triumphs. We understand what you are going through and we know what you feel.

it WILL get better.  Try to do your best to go with the flow, and surrender to the process.  If you can accept what IS, it makes it a lot easier to deal with recovery. 

Just take it a day at a time, and maybe sometimes an hour at a time.  We're here whenever you have a question or need to vent.

Many of us have been just where you are right now, and can say today that it was all worth it.  If you have any questions, ask away.  That's what we're here for.

Like you, I sought help here at the forum when I had my surgery 3 years ago.  Everyone here was so helpful I decided to stick around and help others the way I was helped.

If you had a hernia repair the surgeon probably also reached up into the mediastinum and cut loose and pulled down some more esophagus. This is done so the wrap won't pull back up through the diaphragm.

Once you understand the anatomy and the type of surgery done it's easy to understand what's hurting and why.

My hernia was so bad my stomach was stuck in my chest. I was in the hospital for 4 days and on pain meds for a month.

Hello everyone. I am new here. I had my surgery on March 14. Everything seems to be going as you all are saying in the healing process. You people are great here. I am learning so much. THANK YOU.. My question is.. I am haveing gurgle and rlolling hunger like pains in my stomach. Icannot burp or belch. The doctor told me this. But i am haveing alot of "passing gas". Does this problem continue?? And i get pains in my back behind where the surgery was. Is this normal. I see the doctor next week. Tahnk you again so much. This is a great place for supprt.

well i hit the 2 week mark earlier today.


I'm still dealing with the regular chest pain, it seems to be consistent at night when i'm laying or reclining back, coincides with the pain i was having before i started the omeprazole a long time ago so it seem disappointing.


If i'm up and around i seem to be ok with minimal discomfort.

I have been keeping to the liquid diet up until yesterday at easter dinner i had some very soupy mashed potatoes and squash, and then some jellow, later on somemore mashed potatoes and gravy with blended up ham it all went down fine, but then earlier today i was sick and had some diarrhea and stuff...ick.

I'm actually have quite a bit of the burning chestpain at the moment as i type this laying in bed, i still have my bed raised up from before.

I have an appointment on thursday with the surgeon so hopefully i can get some answers to why i'm getting the regular heartburn/chest pain symptoms the same way i was before when laying down etc.

so far my outlook is bleak :(

does this still sound normal? had bad pain again this morning when i woke up.

i guess just like many others i'm just frustrated with this and being off from work just makes it worse cause all i can do is sit around and think about it.

these last 2 weeks have felt like the longest 2 weeks of my life.


hopefully i can get some good news from the surgeon on thursday and i have not yet seen the bill from the clinic/hospital, hopefully my insurance (not very good) will pay a good portions so i won't have to completely drain my savings as i will be on short term disability until may.

It wouldn't be so bad but it seems that every evening the pain doesn't start to bother me until i lay back say in a chair/couch or i lay down and then i will definitely have pain the next morning, the pain seems to subside once i get up and get moving around which is the same as it was before the surgery.

I understand having pain etc while everything heals, its just that the onset of the pain seems all to familar.

But i'm working through it, i'm sure you'll be reading more from me but hopefully it starts to get more postive as the days go by.

Hi Burning,

Just think about it.  You're having chest pain "like the pain you had" before taking PPIs.  At that time your esophagus was highly irritated and inflammed.  Now you've had major surgery in the chest area and you're experiecing pain.

On top of that, you're at 2 weeks and peak swelling, which is putting more pressure on the area. You've got lots of healing ahead of you, so hang in there.  These first two or three weeks are by far the worse of the recovery, and you've almost got all of that behind you.

The pain will gradually subside as you heal. 

Try not to let it get you down.  Just relax into the recovery and accept whatever path it takes.  Your body will heal in its own sweet time, and you can't rush the process.  Go with the flow and keep your eye on the final goal of healing and a better quality of life. 

There will be some ups and downs in the process, but don't panic.  Just listen to your body and follow its lead.  There will be times when you'll want to back up a bit on foods and baby things a bit.

Remember what I said about peak swelling.  Think about when anything is swollen...the pain is increased.  Relax.  It will improve.  What are you taking for pain?

Hi Burning,

In my experience my swallowing got dicier and more painful as I moved toward the two week mark and peak swelling.  I also had more discomfort at the wrap site generally.  Once on the other side, when the swelling begins to subside, you should feel relief. 

I think you are very wise to break out the heavy duty pain meds.  You shouldn't be in pain if you can help it.  Have you tried ice?  I don't know...it may help.
