Hello everyone, hope you are having a good week.

I guess I'm looking for an understanding of why relfux (LPR or GERD) has resulted in the feeling of a lump in my throat when I swallow?  It's not painful, and only occurs when I swallow.  I don't feel any reflux symptoms other than the throat, clearing of throat and occassional  hoarseness. 

Anyone know why the lump feeling is so common?

Could this be from an isolated few incidents of reflux and it takes a long time to heal, or is this simply silent relfux that I cannot detect happening?

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday to you !

To the best of my knowledge, currently no single explanation has been accepted as actually causing the globus sensation, however, GERD or acid reflux is among the leading factors attributed to its existence. Some people attribute the lump in the throat problem to a hiatal hernia.

If you have not seen a GI physician or had any tests done yet perhaps now is the time to make an appointment.

I am sure you will be hearing from others re your questions.

Thank you for the reply.

 It's amazing these feelings can exist and be so common, yet there seems to no physical explanation or even a truly noticeable anatomical change that explains it.    Gotta love the human body.

I have already had tests run by my ENT, a barium scan (showed a small hiatal hernia and possible slight reflux) and a scope through my nose of my throat, that showed irritation and some inflamation,which the ENT labeled as being from GERD.

More appointments to come.

Some GERD and LPR sufferers have esophageal spasms. The esophagus is a muscle and it is thought that the muscle contracts causing the sensation to push the reflux down. I suffer from the lump in throat as well as chest pain. I have managed it with diet mostly and chewing non mint gum. This cuts down on the instances of this feeling. But you really should get an endoscopy.

I have a followup with my ENT, so I will see if he wants more tests run.

It perhaps may be a spasm, but it only happens when I swallow and just feels like there is something the swallowing motion is encountering (swelling etc) and it causes the lump feeling.  It doesn't hurt, more just an odd feeling.

From my understanding, globus can be caused by edema (or swelling within the throat) and/or our upper esophageal sphincters closing too tight in an effort to protect our throats from the acid. However, in some people, this can also be caused by the anxiety that comes along with this condition.
