Tips for Manometry and pH testing?

Hi all, any tips for a first timer having pH monitoring AND manometry done? My tests are May 15th and I have to be off my PPI for 1 week beforehand.

**PLEASE, folks, no horror stories. I only want to hear what I can do to make the testing better for myself**

I went grocery shopping with the PH aparatus on, and got a lot of stares as you would expect. I thought it was funny but if you would be uncomfortable plan on not going anywhere while you have it and make sure you have food. Other than that I'd say do everything as normally as you would, because you want the results to reflect a normal day. Also, shower before b/c you can't take a shower while you have the thing on...good luck ;)

I had both tests done in January. For the manometry, I had a great nurse who talked during the whole thing to distract during the times I couldn't swallow. I found thinking of things other when I was told not to swallow like what I had to do for my upcoming vacation, what I needed to get at the store, just distracting myself mentally helped. As for the 24 hour Ph, it is more annoying than anything. I stayed home for the whole time, even though they told me I could go about my normal day. I was able to eat and drink without incident. Sleeping was ok too because I sleep on my left side anyway so i just put the device in front of me.

They will tell you this too, but do wear loose clothing that buttons down the front. I kept the same top on the whole 24 hours for the Ph but it's much easier with loose fitting clothes. I even had to sneeze and was to worried the tube would pop out but it didn't.

I spent the day doing everything I could to distract myself from the tube in my throat. I watched movies, played on the computer, did some things around the house. Just don't sit and "think" about it and the time will go quickly for you.

My manometry was tough since a tight throat is my main symptom, then they put that tube down there, and on top of that the person doing the procedure was REALLY pressuring me: you MUST NOT SWALLOW! She even said at one point that there were other patients coming soon so I must not swallow.

I finally told her "It's not a choice I'm making!" and asked her to quit telling me NOT to swallow. She was repeating that instruction to me as she watched the test, which didn't help me as I tried to distract myself with something else. Finally she shut up and I got through it.

For the 24 hour PH, I had discomfort when swallowing since my throat apparatus hit the tube, but I found turning my head to the side helped with it.

Had mine this week.

It was unpleasant, but bearable.

Due to the size of the manometry tube, it was worse than the PH test. The only issue is discomfort, not pain, and getting use to the feeling of the tube being in, which took a few minutes. On the pain side of it, it was tube being passed through my nose, sharp pain, lasted less than a second.

With the tube i went shopping, to the pub and other things. Eating gave me an odd tugging sensation, but no pain! I slept really well at night, no concerns there. I did tell my g/f to sleep on the sofa :-)
