I have been on Prevacid for past 3 months. I was not able to lose weight. I follow a strict vegan diet and I normally have three small meals/ day. Losing extra flab on the stomach is necessary to control GERD.
Exercise- Walking once/twice a day

I am slowly trying to wean off Prevacid. Past one week I have been taking Zantac (150mg). I already dropped one pound in one week. Is there a correlation between PPI and weight gain.

i heard there was recently and it was a relief to hear this! 5 years ago i went on nexium. within 2 years i gained 40 lbs. nothing else changed in my life. diet was the same. i ride horses everyday so i am very active. i am 58 years old, small and have never weighed over 120 lbs my entire life. this has been so frustrating for me. no matter what i did, i could not shed this weight. of course it also made my gerd worse and evevated my bp. well, as of jan. i said "no more"!!!! had the nissen on apr 11 and have been off nexium since then. i have already lost 15 lbs and feel great!

Hi New_2012,

I've had no trouble losing weight while taking Nexium. As a vegan myself, I would suggest kicking up your exercise. Walking doesn't do anything for me anymore, I had to start running, biking, and lifting weights. Not only did I lose some more weight but it improved my overall appearance :)

PPI's in general have so many side effects. When I informed my GI about prilosec side effects, he was shocked.

But with same diet and exercise I already lost 2 pounds.(Correction for my post)

I will try it out for a month and post my experiences on this forum.

I used to lift weights. They can aggravate gerd symptoms. Biking is fine, but running may also cause symptomatic problems.If it working out for you, that's great. In general for gerd, all exercises should be done cautiously.

That is true. I have to time my eating and running very carefully - can't run for 2 hours after I eat - ugh, so inconvenient. I also avoid biking and weight lifting until an hour after I eat. I am not a heavy weight lifter, I only just got up to lifting 3kg weights, woohoo! :D

@aeshleyrose, careful with weight lifting, I have heard stories it can worsen a hiatus hernia, and for patients with a wrap, it can break the wrap!

Welcome to Healing Well!  I never really noticed any difference in weight loss with Nexium or any other PPI.

I have never noticed weight gain from PPIs but found it to be a major problem with some of the antidepressant meds.

I am still on PPIs and have changed my eating habits to a healthier plan and have lost 10 lbs.  I suspect we all react differently to the many meds some of us take.  Good luck to all.
