My Nissan Fundoplication on May 23rd seems to have failed completely. The surgeon doesn't know why, but my LES pressure - Basal on my most recent manometry was 1. Pre-surgery it was 26, which was in the normal range. On my pH study, my reflux injury score also went up meaningfully.

I continue to wake up every morning with heartburn and a sore throat, although the heartbutn subsides once I get up. I sleep on an angle as best I can.

Anyway, the surgeon thinks he should go back in and see what might have happened. I'm worried I'll have the same results and that perhaps my reflux can't be stopped by the Nissan. The surgeon says he's never had one of his fail before and that he doesn't remember doing anything different on mine.

I did have one gaggin/throw-up experience after surgery, but the heart burn had returned by that time...The wrap also looks intact based on my recent Esophogascopy, but I understand that's not perfect evidence.

Any thoughts? I'm currently on 600mgs of Zantac and am about to get back on Protonix as well...

Hi Burnin'Up,

So sorry you're having so many problems.  Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas that might be helpful, but I would suggest that you find a surgeon who deals with redos on a regular basis.  Redos are a lot different than original Nissens, and you'll want to find the best possible surgeon for the job. 

Do you live near a large medical center?  I suggest you do lots of research, interview a couple surgeons, and then decide what you want to do.  If your original surgeon doesn't have a lot of redo experience, I recommend you look elsewhere for the fix.

It sounds like he didn't wrap it tight enough. I'm with dencha on this. I'd seek out another surgeon.

Thank you both for your responses. I have made a couple appointments with other surgeons in the New York City area. I hate the idea of going under again, but I think you're right and it's the correct next move. If anyone has a suggestion of a surgeon, let it fly.
