7 Months Post Nissen Disaster

 Hi,im seven months post nissen and been on a real rollercoaster ride from the op.Ten weeks in i had a redo of the crural repair because it was too tight,then still the problems continued with constant nausea,difficulty swallowing so a stretch was done on the wrap and  i still have problems swallowing certain foods and have nausea after every meal.I started back on a ppi around the time of the redo and i decided to try and come off it this week,i just cant believe that im having serious reflux.I feel worse than i did before the op,ive had no sleep from refluxing at night,my voice is hoarse and i feel really unwell.Im totally depressed with this illness, i just cant beat it.What do you do when youve tried all medications,lifestyle changes over the last six years and finally go for the nissen and it fails too. cry   Barry

Did you have the manometry test and stomach emptying test before the surgery?

I too am curious as to what tests the surgeon ordered before recommending the Nissen?

Hi,i had barium test and an endoscopy but no manometry.My gastro done a manometry maybe a couple of years before i had surgery but never mentioned that anything was wrong he just said i had a lax les.Im thinking that motility is my problem and the surgeon has missed it,or he knows and went ahead hoping i would be ok.I cannot get a straight answer from him or even see him infact,its always his registrars i see.The nhs system over here is not great,you have no say in who you see.Im trying to get a second opinion but there doesnt seem to be anyone else here doing this surgery and i cannot afford to go private.I give up. Barry

Hi Baza

I'm in the North East (UK) and had my op at James Cook University Hospital 9 years ago.

Mine has been fine, so they can do it well there.

You need to contact the hospital where you had your op and ask to speak to the PALS adviser. When you get through, discuss your problems and demand to know what they can do to fix this.

Your GP is also a good route to a resolution too, as they now hold the budget for hospital care and have a greater say over what you receive there.

Hi,elaref,thanks very much for your reply,i went and seen my GP and told him the whole story and he said it all sounds very complicated and i would be better to stay with the surgeon who done the op as another could make things worse,my GP advised me not to get the surgery as he has seen lots of problems after but i was so bad with reflux i didnt listen.He said theres nothing in my history of a swallowing problem from the gastro,just i have reflux from a loose les.Im going to have to demand some answers here as im not getting anywhere.Thanks. I do believe your GP means well but this is one of those times you have to be your own best advocate and look for that second opinion. This is your life and you deserve to feel good so do not feel guilty for making the decision you did to have the surgery but look for answers to make things better for you now.

I am here for you and will keep you in my thoughts hoping you will find the answers to help you.

Don't give up, as I don't intend to. I have private health that costs me $170.00 a month and it hasn't made an ounce of difference when it comes to professionalism. As with most people in life, when you fix something and it doesn't stay fixed, you endeavour to find out why and then try and fix it again. When you are being paid thousands of dollars to do exactly the same thing for someone else then you should be committed enough and indeed governed to do exactly that. Doctors should acknowledge that things can go wrong post op other than the temporary stock standard stuff... ie slipped, disrupted, failed wrap. Tight crual repair, wrap too long, too tight, wrap migration and reherniation. At the end of the day, if there is a potential that an error has ocurred, investigate it properly and if it is conclusive, own it and fix it.
It's the ignoring of a persons symptoms that it is infuriating and that lack of interest and compassion that is soul destroying on top of every lousy physical symptom that you are already trying your level best to contend with.

Hi Barry

Try the PALS (Patient Advice & Liaison Service) route at the hospital where you had your op. They are setup to act as an impartial advocate on your behalf, and by doing this the hospital has to formally respond to your concerns and ongoing problems - this can put pressure on your surgeon to give you answers and hopefully offer you possible solutions.
