Chronic GERD for years, now feelings of something stuck in throat????

I actually joined this group looking for some help for my husband.

For years, 10 or more, he has suffered with Gerd, well last month I got him to go to the Dr and they started him on Ranitidine 150mg 2 xs daily. Instant relief!!! Well for the last 4 days he has been complaining of this feeling that something is stuck in his throat, well lower in is esophagus actually. Today he started having heart burn, which he has had a few times over the years, not really a problem though. He has started feeling really week and just over all ill, as he says that he isnt getting in enough fluids and barely any solids. I think he said he has lost 8lbs. I am worried about him. I have had this same feeling before, but it was during my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis many years ago, which is a rare symptom, mine did however subside. So I can feel for him, but do not have any idea what to do for him. I am worried that he may be dehydrating. Anyone have any ideas, if this is related to Gerd? Should I take him to a Gastro Dr or ENT? From previous comments I wonder if there is anything that can be done but then again research I have done it could be a more serious condition. Thanks for your input.

Welcome to Healing Well.

Sometimes the PPIs and such stop working as well or stop all together and a higher dose or a different one needs to be tried. The feeling of something being stuck in the throat is a symptom of GERD too.

Has he tried going to a bland diet and raising the head of the bed about 4 to 8 inches? (this helps keep the stomach stuff down where it belongs) As far as not getting enough fluids....Push him to drink to stay hydrated. If you believe he is getting dehydrated get a hold of your doctor and let them now what is going on.

I would definitely get into see his GI doctor as soon as you can as it seems the meds are no longer helping.

Has he had any testing done to confirm the GERD? such as EGD, PH study, manometry, stomach emptying, barium swallow?

Bill thanks for your response. No he hasnt had any testing to confirm, but I will be on top of this today. He is such a stubborn person and always putting the health of the children and myself before him. It is time I put my foot down. He does have GI from a previous test years ago. Do you happen to know of anyway to get rid of the feeling of something in the throat??? Thanks again.

Only a Dr. could consider these symptoms, so my advice would be not to be alarmed (as weight loss can occur to GERD sufferers due to their restricted diet, and a feeling of something in the esophagus is also a symptom that some GERD sufferers feel), and to go see a Dr.

However, the feeling of something stuck in the esophagus and weight loss are both potential 'alarm symptoms' given that they could be indicative of esophageal cancer. So my advice would be to see a GI Dr., who will in all likelihood order an endoscopy.

My answer assumes your husband hasn't had an endoscopy in at least a few years...

I also suffered from acid reflux for many years, ranitidine and Nexium were not doing their job. I finally saw a Dr. Wish I had done it earlier. I had an endoscopy done and was diagnosed with Barretts, not good. I then had a Lap Nissen surgery to prevent acids from coming up and creating more damage. I am in week 5 of recovery from the surgery. Recommend he sees a DR. soon. I also had like a lump on the throat that made swallowing a little difficult, I was diagnosed with esophagitis. Please have him  see a DR. soon.

I agree with everyone else. He should get to a GI doctor and hopefully they will schedule an endoscopy to check if there is damage. Chewing non mint gum got rid of the lump in throat feeling for me, but that was also in addition to a GERD diet.

Well we just returned from the GI, he was kinda awed at why all of the sudden he started having this problem. Dr did offer to do edg tomorrow Sat, but it would have to be inpatient at hosp or wait till Mon, outpatient. My husband chose to wait till Mon. He prescribed solutab prevacid and cocktail of lidocaine and mylanta for the weekend. So we will see what is going on next weekend. Thanks to all of you for experiences.

My hubby went into for outpatient EDG today. The results were an ulcer all the way around the esophagus, like the inside a donut. Dr. said it wasnt from GERD, since it wasnt at the top or bottom of esophagus. That it wasnt from stress, diet....so what? Not sure, biopsy taken. We will know if it shows anything in a few days. Put him on Caraphate & still on Prevacid solutab....very little water and no solids going through, the lump in chest is exactly were the ulcer is, and when trying to swallow the muscles are contracting and that is what the feeling of a lump is from.

Miner is a long complicated story, Im 65 now,I had serious HeartBurn as a teen, I mean serious ! then all my life to 40, then it went away, and I got reflux, I was put on the pump inhibitors, Parriet" then at 55 I started getting heart pain when I walked, I then spent 7 years having Every test known to man, but coming up clear, then by accident after another Stomachs specialist said take 4 parriet a day, and after 2 days I was crippled with aches n pains, I Stopped and started on a kiddies dose of Losec.
WOW the heart pain stopped after 2 days,

so I lost a lot of faith in the "specialists"
I then at 65 had my Thyroid removed as I had 4 lumps in it, Binign as it happens, Caused by over dosing on Soya milk and green tea ,from my investigations, but thats ANONTHER story'

ANYHOW, my LATEST complaint is,,,"remember I have reflux," is the feeling that I have a "Boiled egg stuck in my throat, sometimes worse than others but a sicky feeling,in the throat, this is 3 months since Thyroid removal,? anyone confrere .....always feel food in the throat?
