Hi gerdedout,Yes, you can eat what you want after you've healed from surgery. Generally people may have a trigger food that still may bother them, but overall pretty much any food is fine. I have reactive stomach that is very sensitive, but that was the case before surgery as well. I'm the exception, though, and not the rule.
I eat whatever veggies I like, and never have a problem with them. Just after surgery when there's more bloating, you'll want to stay away from gassy vegetables. Once you're fully healed, though, you can eat those freely as well. I used to take BEANO tablets when I ate gassy foods.
I enjoy drinking beer and thought I might not be able to drink it after surgery, but I have no problem. Soda can be more problematic because the carbonation is more severe, but many still drink it once healed. Before that, they tend to let it get a little flat, then drink it. The only problem I've ever had was champagne, but that's super duper bubbly!
Some surgeons continue their patients on PPIs during recovery to protect their healing wrap. Others take their patients off immedately. Many never take medication again, but some need it at lower levels. I have asthma, and my asthma doc wants me to continue on Protonix 40mg before dinner just to be safe. A Nissen doesn't stop reflux 100%, or we wouldn't be able to get foods into our stomachs. I also sleep with the head of my bed elevated for the same reason. My asthma doc figures better safe than sorry.
Good luck!
Denise
