Frustrated - Is it possible to have GERD and LPR? Are they different?

I have had Acid Reflux for over 7 years.  Was diagnosed in 2005, went on Aciphex for a year, and was great, with no meds until this year.  I'd been eating horribly for over a year and the heartburn slowly came back.  I also noticed that after I ate I would cough and need to clear my throat.  My doctor didn't think it was an issue.  A few weeks ago, after really bad hearburn for days, my doctor prescribed me Dexilant.  I went to the pharmacist in the medical building (doctor gave me a prescription card for a discount) and got the medication.  I was on Dexilant 30MG (once a day) for a month (it did help but not as much as I'd hoped).  I had the pharmacy transfer the prescription to my local CVS.  When I picked up my next month's supply I noticed it was for 60MG.  Confused, I called my doctor's office and they checked and yes, I was prescribed 60MG but for whatever reason the other pharmacy only gave me 30MG (and it was only for once a day).  I started on the 60MG on Christmas Day.  I don't get too much heartburn anymore but I still get the awful throat burning after I eat or drink something (and it's mainly after I drink water).  I try to eat first, with no water, wait about 15 minutes, and then drink water.  This helps a little.  I'm becoming afraid again to eat anything!

So my question is, am I having issues because I wasn't on the full dose?  Does this medication take time to work?  Or is it possible I have LPR as well?  I am so frustrated!  I feel like my throat will never heal. confused

Dexilant may not work for you, you have to give it some time though, 6-8 weeks is typical. My experience is I have had to try a lot of different PPI's, Losec did work best for me. Had side effects from others. I was taking 60 mg of Dexilent but found it made me itchy and over time it started getting worse.

If Aciphex worked why not go back on it? My first prescription was Losec and the GI guy wanted to keep switching me to others , most that weren't generic, after many side effects I went back to Losec. Wasted my time trying the others. Remember though you need to watch what you eat, don't late night snack and get your lifestyle in order to reduce the impact of this disease. Drugs are not the only answer to this just one part.

I've heard Dexilant is a "miracle" for some people. So depressed it doesn't seem to be working miracles for me. I did get a little off track with my eating during the holidays. Not bad, but slipped in a few treats here and there. I hate feeling deprived!

I think my Dr. put me on Dexilant because I said I felt pills getting stuck in my throat.

you can definitely have both. I had gerd in the beginning, but now it got up to my throat and get throat burning, ball in the throat feeling, mucus, the works.
This all happened while I was on ppi for 9 months, and I feel like it's getting worse.
The curious thing is that my bravo test (on ppi) showed I refluxed only 2 times, although I had symptoms 24 hours. My score was 0.2 Who knows, I tried to decrease my ppis and take only zantac, but my throat started burning. I don't want to scare you but be careful with this disease, it's horrible.

I get more throat burning than heartburn now. And I've been on Dexilant for a few weeks. I've been taking it faithfully.

Yes, you scared me. If I read too much on the internet, it scares me. I'm a worry wort by nature. I just want to feel better. :-(

I've had GERD for 15 years and PPIs worked great for about 8 years and then all of a sudden I switched to every PPI with little help. The only one that helped the most was Prevacid, which wasn't helping hardly at all in the last few months. I'm now taking Aciphex (3rd day) and I have the worst throat burning!! My question is that I've never actually had burning in my chest, it's always been in the form of acid in the throat, so that is still GERD right? The only other atypical symptoms I have are sour taste in mouth and PND, which I've had as long as I've had Gerd, mainly from allergies and a deviated septum. Would that be LPR? I don't have any of the breathing or voice issues.
