Hi renegade,Welcome to the Healing Well Wrapped Club! Glad to hear you're home and healing. It's the best place to be. When I first started hanging around this forum, it always seemed strange that you can get shoulder pain from stomach surgery! I was told by my night nurse in the hospital to get up and walk whenever I got up to go to the bathroom. You should have seen me at the hospital, doing laps around the nurse's station, dragging along my IV pole!
At home I walked all around my house for the first few days, then moved to the treadmill, where I walked a 0 incline and slow at the beginning, then gradually increasing speed and incline over the next days and weeks. I found that the more I walked, the less shoulder pain I had.
I'm not sure if your surgeon told you, but during the first two weeks or so, your wrap will become increasingly swollen, peaking on or about day 14 for most people. Don't be surprised if your swallowing gets worse before it gets better. Also, remember that the esophagus is a "dumb organ" that interprets all pain as reflux. The first two weeks is the toughest part of recovery...hang in there. It gets better!
If you can surrender to your recovery and follow it where it leads, you'l find recovery easier. Those who struggle against what "is" have a much rougher time. You can't rush this recovery. It is as it is. You'll gradually improve over the next weeks and months. It takes a full 6 months for most of the healing and a year for the rest (which is mostly adjustment to the changes in the upper GI tract).
Happy healing!
Denise
