Gastroparesis testing

My GI suggested I should get a gastroparesis test since I used to have burps long after having food. Looking for answers to a few questions:

- Does the test produce any discomfort ? I imagine I need to be in the office at 1, 2, 3 & 4 hrs ?
- Are eggs really representative of all kinds of food ? Doesn't protein stay longer than carbs in the stomach?
- Any other remarks/wisdom on the test or its interpretation?

Hi GH,

I had the test when hospitalized with horrible gastritis/esophagitis and asthma.  At the time my stomach and esophagus were so ripped up I thought that there would be no way I could eat a nuclear egg salad sandwich.  I can tell you that it wasn't bad at all.  The egg salad tasted fine, and I really didn't get horrible pains in my stomach.  It is a long test, but you're just lying around, so it's not difficult.

I think eggs are pretty standard, and as they are made up of protein, along with the bread probably represent a pretty average meal.

How big was the salad: full meal sized or more like a snack ?

Hi GH,

It was just a small sandwich (not very thick) on white bread.  Not all that big.  If I could handle it in that condition, you'll do fine.

I was only curious because I may end up researching if stomach emptying performance depends on size of the meal too.

Hi GH,

Just my two cents...

When I had nuclear Gastroparesis testing, I sat up about a 30 degree angle and was given Oatmeal, since I do not like eggs. The whole test lasted about 2+ hours, with feedings and pictures taken at specific intervals. Even though I had a bit of reflux at that degee of recline, the test proved normal for me.

The radiologist was really great - she spoon fed me (certain amounts.) :)

The entire time for the test does depend if if have normal motility, hyper or hypo.

Once the last bit of food enters the Duodenum, the test is offically over.

The test was very easy, I was given scrambled eggs and every half hour they would take pictures of my stomach.  Just boring, nothing difficult.

I've been asking if I can be tested for that because of how long I can taste food in my burps after I eat certain foods. Usually it happens with fatty and larger meals, but sometimes I can taste food in a burp that has a strong flavor. Sometimes it's up to 14 hours later! That depends I guess if I ate late at night. I just feel like I may not digest food that fast. But I guess fatty food can take a while to digest. Mainly it can be up to 6 hours later in the day. How about you? I'm just weirded out by it.

The doctor told me that my symptoms don't really sound like gastroparesis, so he said that if he still sees food hanging around in my stomach when he does the endoscopy on me in a couple weeks, then he'll order the test. I just want to do it and rule it out.
