i'm just wondering if there is anybody here who had a hiatal hernia repair surgery without fundoplication, or is it even possible to do that?
i know most doctors will push you to get a fundoplication as well, but i don't want that - i'm way too young to do that, and the thought of not being able to burb or vomit scares me, not to mention all the side effects they don't tell you about.


yes, you'll still have GERD - i get that but i'm in a country where less invasive procedure like linx is not available, but i don't want to live with these chest pains that come and go, shoulder pain and back pain, at least in my view if the hernia is corrected then logically these pain should be alleviated if not gone. that will hopefully keep the GERD manageable with remedies and even PPI's if it comes to it.


what do you guys think? is it possible?

It can be done. The hard part is finding a surgeon who is willing to do it. Then it's a 50/50 shot that your symptoms will be any better. If you have a huge hernia I would say it might work, but if it;s a relatively small hernia I am not so sure it will work the way you want.

Me, I choose the full repair with the nissen. It has been a great help for me, but in the end it's your decision to make.

i'm certain i have a hiatal hernia, i'm going to have barium swallow to confirm it, will it be able to measure the size i don't know, my previous endoscopy showed nothing of a hiatal hernia and the doctor was adamant i didn't have it, even though i had symptoms but it wasn't severe - just yesterday i had an intense chest pain and wasn't able to sleep last night, my symptoms are regurgitation, burning throat, shoulder pain and back pain and constipation- just my luck huh.

i've been emailing doctors in my area to at least give me some ideas (it's a weekend so i can't call them right now) hopefully i'll get one of them to accept.


why can't linx be available in my country? now i'll probably have to spend a lot of money to get it done in the UK.

The thing with hiatal hernias is that basically everyone has one, but some have slightly larger and some have way larger than normal hernias. It is basically a gap in the diaphragm around the lower end of the esophagus.
As with people having different size hernias, some people with them never have problems and some people with rather normal size hernias will have severe GERD. My hernia was about 1cm. Not all that big compared to some people who have 5 to 7 cm ones and there stomach is trying to go into there chest.

Since they couldn't see a hernia on th EGD, yours id probably a smaller one. I personally believe if it is a small hernia you probably won't benefit much from just having it tightened up. But I am not a doctor so you and your doctor will need to go over your test results and determine what is your best option.

Also remember most people who have reflux surgery and don't have any issues at all probably don't post it on the net. Unlike someone who does have issues. Most issues with the surgery are temporary also. I have no restriction as to what I can eat and I can burp, but I can't vomit so I keep anti nausea pills with me just in case.
