Don't get too scared by our posts. Most of us only post when we have a problem. A lot of the replies though, are really positive. If you need the surgery, then there's not much to do but get it. I was terrified before my surgery, really happy after I got it. We're not doctors, so you're reading our personal experiences.

Some people take a long time to recover after the surgery and some only days or weeks. I was one of the long timers, but I had a huge hiatal hernia.

I spent a couple of nights with some pillows on my couch. I had no reflux. I had none of the symptoms of my hernia. I was just uncomfortable in general. Your doctor will prescribe pain medications just before you go home. I couldn't swallow pills so I got liquids, but I couldn't swallow pills well before the surgery. Most people are OK with pills. You might want to get a pill crusher beforehand - but ask your doctor(s) about crushing your meds!

Spend some time reading. It relieved my anxiety to know exactly what was going on and finding that most people feel way better afterwards.

well reading these posts are very helpful, at first i thought that i could just take a few days off of work. I thought that i could have the surgery on Thursday and be back at work on Monday. But from these posts i figured wrong. I didn't want to use my vacation time on this because i was hoping to use it to go visit family in June. still a little scared but i was also scared when i had my hysterectomy four years ago. That worked out OK. opnwhl4 i did read your post and wow, no offense but i hope all that does not happen to me. The surgeon i have comes highly recommended and i was told that he does this surgery all the time, so i hope they are all right about him. One of my bosses at work had him as a surgeon and he also says that he is great.

Try not to be afraid. Trust in your surgeon, go in knowing what to expect & ask your doctor any questions you have that are not something you expected. I am on my 3rd day pre-op & things are great. Yes, I am a little sore where the incisions are but my swallowing has gotten much better than what it was the first day after surgery. My doctor told me to take in slow when eating or drinking & that's what I do. I have only had liquids or very soft food like rice pudding & poached egg, but I am happy with that for now. The best part is that I have no chest pain constantly or burning in ,y throat - I notices those improvements immediately. I wish you the best & good luck w/your surgery.
