How mobile are you after surgery ?

First ten days I was pretty much able to walk around the house.
10th day about to drive to store and shop for 30 minute (not pushing cart or loading it).
Back to work day 14 but sat a lot.

Well it depends on what you are meaning by mobile. You can walk and things like that right away, but I wouldn't plan on doing laps around a track for a while. LOL! Basically you can do most things, but you are limited on how much weight you can lift. That is usually 5 to 10 lbs for about 6 to 8 weeks depending on the surgeon and which way they have to do it.
You will get worn out pretty easily for a few weeks. For some reason the surgeons think this is just like having you gallbladder or appendix removed, but this is major surgery and they move a lot of things around in there. That takes more time than a couple weeks to heal from. Your incisions will heal LONG before the insides are even remotely healed.
Just listen to what YOUR body tells you. It will let you know if you do to much.

no chance of laps to be fair :) sitting in front of the tvwatching films and on the playstation will take the majority of the time up :)

with you saying its major surgery do you think my surgeon is been optimistic by saying ill be back at work in 3 weeks, my job is sometimes physically demanding and don't want to rush going back after 3 weeks if there is danger of causing injury.

my surgery is scheduled for friday so currently asking all silly questions :)

I am a mechanic and I had to be off for at least 6 weeks, but I had to lift very heavy parts and go up and down 5 flights of stairs all night.
It really depends on what the physically demanding involves.

Hi Stu

I was given a sick note by my surgeon for 6 weeks, but this was back in 2003 when the op was fairly new.

My job is mainly office based with a bit of driving, so I could have probably gone back a week or so earlier but the main problem I had was a lack of energy in the first few months. Eating smaller and mostly liquid meals meant I was pretty much exhausted all the time - although the weight loss was a nice side effect as just after my op was the last time I actually hit my ideal weight!

If you are planning on going back sooner, you really need to make your employer aware of this so they can take this into account in regards to your workload and what they ask you to do - e.g. things like operating heavy machinery when tired have a tendency to get messy...

Thanks for the replies they are much appreciated.

I work in a warehouse environment most of my work is office based but have to do some manual, forklift work some of the time.

Not only did they change the date but also the hospital it's now are bishop Auckland hospital and I have just spoke to them and I have to be there for 7am and I am first on the list at 8am. It all seems very real now and nerves are kicking in.
