What did you use to help with nausea?

My sister just got out of the hospital Friday, well Wednesday she was back in the ER with vomiting. Once she start she can't seem to stop, her nausea will stop and come back. She is sucking on ice but I wanted to know should she she try and eat some crackers? She doesn't want to go back into the hospital. She has an appointment with her GI to get Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication this coming Wednesday. I am very worried about her and scared of the unknown. Please any suggestions on what she can do to stop the nausea?

Welcome to Healing Well.

Why was she in the hospital before this ER episode? What do the doctors say (very important)?

We are not MD's in this forum, nor would it be correct for me to suggest anything at this point in time.

There are some excellent people here to help guide you and your sister through the NF, so no worries about that.

This acute stage is more important! Please keep us informed.

I am sorry, I am just a nervous wreck. She was diagnosed with a Hiatal hernia and GERD, she was in the hospital for 5 days because she couldn't keep foods down. Her doctor told her that he thinks it was liquid that was making her sick but she can't even keep down solid foods tomorrow.

Hi S Kendrick,

I understand what you are going through.

Obviously, the MD/MD's in charge of your sister will be addressing her acute state and find out what is wrong.

Perhaps she has an infection?

I'm confident that they will get to the actual root cause and address it very soon.

In the meantime, why don't you post your questions on the NF, so some of our moderators like Bill and Denise can help answer them? They have helped me when I was evaluating the NF for myself and are great resources.

There are also many others who can lend a helping hand. Hang in there.

I use prescription Zofran for nausea. For severe emergencies I try to keep paregoric on hand. It wasn't available for a while but is supposed to be back on the market. It's Rx too.

Nothing helped my nausea until I had the nissen fundoplication - nausea was gone immediately? Hope everything goes well for your sister.

Welcome to Healing Well,

I have used phenergan for nausea for about 6 years now. Works very good for me. Of course these meds need to be prescribed. One trick you can try at home though is to put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and put it under her nose. Sometimes this will stop the nausea.

Hi Josie,

Nausea and not being able to burp are the two things that really scare me about reflux surgery. I find it interesting that the surgery made your nausea better. were you in a lot of pain after the surgery?

Some of the unknown secret about strong perfume it can stoped nausea .
Just spray a big amount in your hand and take deep breath of it ( breath from ur noise) .

If the person has nausea from GERD the surgery will usually stop the nausea because the nausea trigger is under control.

It's hard to really say how much pain each person will be in after surgery as every body has a different pain tolerance. I know I woke up the 1st 2 times in a lot of pain in recovery, but they quickly got that under control with meds.Once you able to get out of bed and walk the pain gets better the more times you walk.
