I wonder if anyone is diagnosed with that.
They have another name for that - functional heartburn.
It means there is no abnormal amount of acid refluxed into esophagus, yet the patient still feels heartburn.
It is treated with tri-cyclic antidepressant as a pain modulator.

Yeap, On my "meds" the doc says my reflux is within limits for someone on reflux meds so it just must be hypersenitive esophagus. When I went to see a ENT, as soon as he read from my GI "hypersentive esophagus" the appointment was over. Oh, but he did bill me $300....ugh! So. I continue with the daily peaks and valleys.

Interesting question and I am wondering if you have been diagnosed with this disorder ?

"The study investigators found that patients who were PPI-resistant and diagnosed with hypersensitive esophagus using 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring experienced reduced reflux symptoms after receiving 20 mg of the SSRI citalopram compared with a placebo."

I have heard this a lot. It sounds like nerve issues. I wonder sometimes if I have this as my pains float from chest to upper back to around ribs. Or it could be IBS of the upper digestive track. Either way, GI doctors have not found more of a solution. I am on zoloft for the anxiety related to the condition and it has helped....not sure because of the hypersensetivity or reduction in anxiety. There does not appear to be a clear answer for me.

I know this is an old thread but been searching around for info on hypersensitivity.

Interestingly I was on citalopram but when my esophagus problems started my doctor took me off it and put me on venlafaxine as she said citalopram can cause side effects in the gut :S

Hi Andy1986,

I have acid based GERD and was "diagnosed" with "Esophageal Hypersensitivity" on 2 occasions.

Bottom line, IMO, is that the MD's cannot pinpoint the exact cause why reflux is spurting back into the esophagus. The technology isn't just there for that, so they recommend PPI's or various types of surgery to lessen/eliminate the source of the reflux. Sure, you might feel a burning sensation more than another person since no two people are alike and that makes sense. But some of these MD's make it think that it is all in your head at times - which it is not.

Sorry to but in but I found this topic interesting because I been looking a lot into nerve damage or sensitive nerves related to GERD/LPR. So your test showed no reflux or there was still reflux but only a little bit? I am getting the 24hr probe done soon, and I want to come up with best possible outcomes that's causing my issues in order to discuss with my doctor the best medications or treatments.

Gastricman: Yeah I think what you said about how some doctors make you think it's in your head sometimes. I can see where they are coming from but I am big believer in trusting what your body tells you. I just don't think it's in our head if we know there is something wrong but it hasn't been pinned down yet you know? :)
