Is it necessary to do swelling barium after surgery ?

I had my surgery befor 4 weeks ago , my doctor didnt ask me to do swelling barium is it necessary to do it or not ?

In my case, it is going to be done because I had continued symptoms that they thought MAY be caused by reflux. It is used to rule out that there is an anatomical problem with the surgery.

I would say it's not needed unless it's suspected that there is still reflux.

How common is it to have a barium swallow the following day of surgery for a nissen (full wrap)? I am scheduled for surgery this next Wednesday and the M.D. told me he will do one before he discharges me. How hard is it to swallow the barium post op? Anyone have this?

I had a barium swallow done the day after with all 3 of my nissens. They usually do it to be sure there are no leaks in there before they turn you loose drinking and eating.

I had my surgery list past Tuesday and I had the barium swallow the next day. They told me it was to check for leaks and swelling before letting me drink and eat. Everything looked good so I was able to start with the liquid diet..

You were told exactly the same as me.

Just a tidbit of info... I am very happy they do the barium swallow after the surgery. I had an esophageal perforation during an EGD and within 3.5 hours after the EGD I was in the most extreme pain I have ever experienced. Not only is a leak into the chest painful it can be deadly if not taken care of. I also was within an hour of having my esophagus removed twice due to leaking from the hole even after it was repaired.
So please be sure to do the barium swallow after the surgery.
