Since I'm probably going to be put on an antidepressent in the near future, I'm going to ask about
the Elavil. I was put on Setraline (an SSRI) once before, but that made me more depressed, so I hope history doesn't repeat itself..! On the other hand, I can highly relate to the author's remarks, and have made some observations of my own that may show this being neurological damage instead of pure LPR. Please do read this, and see if you have had similar experiences:
- None of my tests so far have shown conclusive evidence of LPR, not even an ENT's larynx scope. Of course, I am still waiting on a Restech pH test, but on the other hand I have had the Peptest spit test, and only 1 of 3 samples showed pepsin. Moreover it showed it when I was symptom-free, and a research paper I was given says this pepsin falls into the NORMAL RANGE that people reflux - up to 3 times a day in controlled subjects.
- Like the author, although I get typical LPR symptoms like a burning throat and throat clearing, I can still shout and sing very well. Furthermore I'm used to getting sore throats all year around as my room lacks a humidifier and I don't like sleeping with the windows
open in this noisy neighbourhood! Even more important, my symptoms sometimes disappear entirely when I CHANGE POSITION; for example if I'm sitting in an armchair, leaning back slightly can completely cancel out symptoms. Could this be because of the way nerves are being pressed?
- There's no doubt tablets like Cimetidine and Gaviscon Advance are working slightly for me, but what is strange is how a H2 Blocker works when much stronger PPIs do not. I still get burping, coughs and mucus with or without them, but the Cimetidine may simply be getting rid of some natural reflux that I may be hypersensitive to. Furthermore, Gaviscon Advance is a strong tasting med; after I swallow it, sometimes even that burns my throat against all logic! Even alkaline water can cause symptoms in me, and I never get heartburn or other stomach symptoms.
- My symptoms began after a very stressful period of my life, coincidentally around the time my health anxiety kicked in. Does stress after the neurological system or cause LPR/Hypersensitivity? Both of these may explain a lot for me.
- Some foods that you'd think would set off my throat and stomach like a volcano have no effect on me. For example, I was delighted to eat a birthday cake a few months back without reprecussions, and just 2 days ago, I had a barbecue without burning in my throat. In fact the burning only began when I got home and ate 2 digestive biscuits with some milk, and it was immediate. You'd think sugary cakes, fatty burgers and chicken would do me more harm than milk and what is in theory a very alkaline biscuit, so either my LPR symptoms defy logic, or I may just be sensitive.
- Some foods DO cause burning in me, but there may be good reasons; I felt horrendous after having a Lasagne the other day, but it was very hot and I washed it down with cold, alkaline water. I also had an ice drink from Starbucks - a syrup and cream drink, I forget the name - which did me no good. What is important is that at both times, I had my Gaviscon on me, and took it immediately, and it didn't work at all.
- Other foods like Oatmeal and of course, alkaline water DO cause symptoms in me sometimes. Dr Kouffman herself says Oatmeal "never causes reflux." Either I'm seriously unlucky or something else is responsible here...
Sorry for the long post, maybe anyone else can relate to my observations? Should I pursue the antidepressant Elavil again?
