Hiatal Hernia

Just got back from having a colonoscopy/endoscopy,this is my third endoscopy in 6 years,never been diagnosed with a hernia until today,is this a common thing too happen?

Hiatal hernias can be "caused" too. not just happen over time. I know exactly when I caused my Hiatal hernia. 2 years ago, a Wake Board, too much speed and a wipeout where I landed extremely hard on my back. I didn't know it at the time that I had done it. I just knew it hurt in my chest under my ribs for quite a while. The Doctor confirmed that it is probably when it happened. He said It was probably already on its way i just helped it along.

It was the start of the worst part of my Acid/stomach/esoph issues.

Hiatus hernia is quite common, and they do move about. I have had two endoscopies, both showed different types of hernia. I also had a barium swallow which showed no hernia at all

If the hernia is small you might have just not been told about it. Was the endo done by the same doctor? Did you ask whether it had ever been seen previously.

More importantly, is the hernia very large? Is it causing problems? Older adults often have hernias and never know it.

And Sarco, yes they can be caused by accident. Mine was. After a high speed collision I had to have surgery to pull my stomach out of my chest.

Different drs. each time,its possible the 1st two drs. missed it,thanks for all your replys.
