acid rebound

Hi my name is Geri. I have been suffering with acid rebound for 6 wks now. I stopped Prilosec 6 weeks ago due to heart palpitations and severe burning in my mouth. I have taken Prilosec off since it was put on the market. I have never been so sick in my lifetime. The acid in my stomach was like a volcano erupting. After 3 weeks of aweful burning I took Zantac one time and had an allergic reaction. My tongue mouth and lips were blood red and started to swell. I have had yellow diarrhea and yellow stools for 4 weeks now. I was hopitalized for low potassium two weeks ago. This week I had a scope done and biopsies done of my stomach. My doctor said I have severe gastritis and duodeonitis. He gave me a prescription for 40 mg of Protonix. I refuse to take anymore PPI s. This did not make the GI GUY HAPPY. He did not want to hear about my reactions to Prilosec or Zantac and he totally did not believe its acid rebound. I been on a low carb diet for over a month. Today I found information on Alkaline diets and tried cucumbers as suggested food to eat between meals..this worked wonders for me today. I did not have to take any Mallox and had no pain or burning. I will try this diet next. I have read this rebound could last up to 12 weeks or more. God I hope I could do this...Good Luck to everyone dealing with this nightmare.

Thank You for the links you provided. I have read everyone one of them , in my 6 Weeks of suffering. I don't remember the exact site where I found the possible 12 weeks duration of acid rebound. I do know it was a Harvard doctor that wrote the article. I pray we can all go through this safely. Please share any information you may have on restoring our health.

I am going through the same nightmare and stumbled on this post of yours. How are both of you doing now? Please do share. I stopped taking Ppis on May 30. After about 2 days of being ok, I am in living hell. I feel reflux like I have never felt before. I can assure you that I was a 1000 times better BEFORE I started the PPSs. I am on Zantac now and refuse to put any ppi in my body. Definitely do not want to go through this again. Just can't imagine living like this everyday.

I no longer take ppi's either. I have struggled with gerd for over 17 yrs and things only got worse when I took ppis daily, now my gerd/lpr is worse than I was before I took ppis daily. My acid rebound lasted 6 weeks of burning hell, I used zantac, tums and aloe vera to help control.

We purchased PPI's in a capsule form and went to a health food store and purchased empty capsules and split the PPi capsules in half for three weeks, then split in thirds for three weeks , then in quarters , then into eighths. Sometimes took caps twice a day too.
I realize this is tedious to do but feel it is helpful to very slowly titrate down. Rebound is documented in the literature but have not found that the doctors are in agreement about it. This is my personal opinion.

I thought Nexium 40 was in a capsule. Gently snip the tip off and pour half into two separate capsules. That is what we did with our Prevacid. ( I'm not trying to talk you into it but just telling you what we did).. My best to y'all.

I took 150mg 2x daily, between 3 to 15 tums, carafate, and a few sips of baking soda in water. In addition I would drink 2/8 oz of aloe vera daily. It was a long 6 weeks of burning hell! When I'm off ppi's I get typical symptoms and when I'm on ppis I get atypical symptoms.

The rebound did finally stop but like I said, I still struggle with symptoms.

The local pharmacy in the grocery store (Publix) did not have empty capsules. The local health food store had them 100 for $4.50. They were slightly clear, easy to take apart and easy to see through. We set up a clean area of white paper with turned up edges in case of a few spills until you get a system worked out. Initially took half PPI in morning and H2 at night for three weeks , then titrated down. (Take a fine scissor and very gently snip an opening on the tip of the capsule. Do not try to cut or saw the capsule in half--won't work-- I learned that the hard way.) Erica, please I'm not trying to talk you into it but this is what we did.
It's scary this rebound stuff. This titration takes several months, patience and steady hands. Want the best for you. Pat

I am so glad I found this forum! I have been on Nexium 40mg for approximately 3 years after being diagnosed with ulcers and acid reflux. Then I began having the GERD symptoms too and Zantac 300mg was added. I inadvertently experienced the acid rebound a couple of months ago after missing a couple of doses of Nexium when my script ran out, not knowing about the acid rebound effect. I have never been so sick in my life, for 5 days I couldn't keep anything down and felt like I had nothing but a stomach full of acid that kept coming up for days until I was dehydrated and on the verge of going to the ER. After getting back on Nexium, it turned around within a day or so. Since then, I have begun taking stock of how my health has gone downhill over the past few years and started doing research on the side effects of Nexium. Although my problems such as fatigue, weight gain, water retention and hair loss are not mentioned as major side effects on the sites describing the pill, I found tons of blogs and this forum to the contrary and now feel like I am not alone in this battle. I desperately want to get off of this pill and the Zantac, which has similar side effects, but am so scared of going through the rebound effect again. I don't know how I will get through it and still be able to work but I have decided that my health has got to be my main concern and if I have to take off days or even weeks from work, I'll just have to work something out with my employer and hope I still have a job when this is all through. Of course I will go see my GI first and see if I should have another upper GI done to check on the progress of the ulcers and then see about getting my dosages cut in half to begin weaning myself off of this stuff. I've learned a lot today of ways to deal with the acid build up with various herbs and supplements and certain foods. I hope you all are having success and able to hang in there and get through the weeks of inevitable suffering to get to the other side. Nice to know there is a support group here so in times of weakness, rather than reaching for another purple pill, I can come here and find fellow seekers of better health through alternatives to these medications with such bad side effects and dependency. I will like hearing how you all are doing better which will give me hope that I can get there too.

Just checkin in with fellow victims of PPI's. I have been off Nexium for 6 weeks now and have had good and bad days. After appointments with the gastro dr who does not believe in rebound , I have been seeing a naturopath . I 've been taking DGL and aloe and them tried d-limonene which has made me feel I am going backwards, terrible acid. Burning in mouth and lips. Anyone had this reaction? I stopped it after 3 doses. Back to the drawing board!

My thoughts exactly!!!

I have weaned down from 40mg of Nexium 1 x day to 10mg every other day, it has been a long process and yes I had rebound at every step down.
