How I'm handling LPR...

I'm sure this is not the best remedy for this horrible
disease but this is how I'm finding a little relief:
My symptoms consist of chronic burping,
throat clearing & burning throat/mouth. I have
been suffering with Gerd and LPR for 9 years. My
symptoms are mostly during the day. Very few times have I
had night time issues in 9 years of suffering. My
Impedance studies are all normal and their is no
baretts or esophagitis.

My Relief..A.M- *Zantac 150 (can't take PPI's)
*Tylenol 1000mg (can't take NSAIDS)
*Xanax .25 mg (for the horrific anxiety this
disease causes me)
*Sinus irrigation with 8oz of distilled water, a saline
pack and a carpule of Budesonide for nasal polyps.
I allow a little of this rinse to drain down my throat for
the possibility of reducing the irritation and pain I feel
in my throat. Before I irrigate I warm the solution for
25 seconds in the microwave. (always use distilled
water for irrigation!!!)
P.M- Repeat the above.

I follow a fairly strict low fat diet. Also, no Sodas, caffiene, fruit juices, Vinegar based dressings, red sauces of any kind, pepper or any
seasonings on ANY of my food.

It Stinks to live with this everyday but I guess it could be
worse! There really isn't a lot of options out there for LPR
Related Gerd. The above is just my way of coping! My prayer
is all of our suffering will end some day! I also found out last
week my 11 year old daughter has GERD/LPR with mild subglottic
stenosis. Luckily She is doing OK with PPI's at this point. I just
hate this for her! :0(

Do you take the Tylenol and Xanax every day? I take Tylenol too but I'm so afraid of taking it too often and ruining my liver. I've also been told not to take Nsaids too. My Dr. says that's what caused my ulcers. Since I've been doing research, it seems like a lot of people get some relief from Xanax. I will have to ask my Dr. about it. For the most part, the PPI's have helped my heart burn but my main LPR symptom is a terrible cough and I would love some help with that.

I have just recently started taking alkaline water and now I'm waiting for some Gaviscon Advance in hopes that will help

I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl. It's bad enough when we get it but so awful to see your children suffer. Best wishes and good health to you both!

Thanks for sharing what is working for you with everyone. I understand how tough it is on you and your little girl to find out she has GERD/LPR.

Hi Caseysmom,

I do take tylenol and xanax everyday. Even though
the xanax dosage I take is low this drug is addictive.
So, be careful if your doctor prescribes
this for you. Iv'e been on this drug a long time for
anxiety and it would be hard for me to get
off. However, when dealing with this aweful
Gerd/LPR issue, it's taken everything out of me!
I can't see my life now without xanax helping
me cope. I also think at times my gerd issues get worse
with stess & anxiety so xanax definitely helps.
I could probably do even better with a higher dose
but I refuse to up my dosage! Anyway, I have thought
about trying the alkaline water but remain skeptical.
Let me know if it helps you! I have been thinking
lately about surgery but my studies show such
low total reflux events my Docs do not recommend
surgery. It's all so confusing and surgery really
scares me. I have an appointment in a few weeks
for my daughter to see an airway digestive specialist
to evaluate the severity of situation. I have
learned in life....it's always something!

I have this same thing and have had it now for over 2 years. Chronic, uncontrollable belching that is everyday and goes on for hours. Forcing myself to gag or vomit will relieve it briefly and then it starts up again. Doesn't matter what I eat or if I eat at all. Seen all kinds of doctors and have had many tests: CT Scans, upper and lower GI's, Endoscopy, motility studies. All come back as "unremarkable". I do have a small hernia but it's dismissed as not the cause of my issue. I've even tried alternative medicine such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine, bio-feedback, cranial manipulation all to no avail. My gastroenterologist has said I may just have to live with it as he sees no cure. Anti-spasm drugs don't work and I have tried a whole list of remedies that I have seen online too numerous to mention but all a waste of time. Two Doctors are convinced it has something to do with my diaphram and I'm inclined to agree as the nerve goes into spasm and starts the cycle of belching every 2-3 seconds that goes on for hours. I've searched these threads and have yet to find someone who has been cured of this.

You are not alone with this burping issue. My issues follow meals and then will give me a break for a little while. But if I drink anything or cough then I will burp some more. I feel as if the LES has weakened over the years and simply can't hold normal eating/drinking with swallowed air. I also have bad anxiety issues and have wondered if this could be a cause??? All my test have been basically within normal limits too. My Docs say this is Aerophagia (swallowing to much air). I have a hard time believing that I swallow that much
air. Apparently people with high anxiety swallow a lot of air and don't realize it. I remain skeptical!
