I was thinking back to the endoscopy (and barium swallow) I had earlier this year. Do doctors check the functioning or general condition of the LES and/or UES when conducting this test? My report says my LES is fine, but from searching the internet I can't find any consistent answers about if this is a real diagnosis or not.

The reason I'm curious about this is because I've tried and failed to wean off my Cimetidine tablets once again this week, and I'm trying to pinpoint a cause for my symptoms as well as if I'm going to have this for life. It's slowly driving me mad, and I really don't want to take drugs for it simply because they remind me I'm ill, which only makes me more depressed.

As far as I know, they did not check anything thoroughly until I had the manometry done, they did not say anything about my LES after I had my barium swallow or my upper GI done.

A manometry is the only way to really check the pressures of the LES. A barium swallow will show if anything comes back up through the LES.

Can some one fill me in--I am kind of ignorant. What exactly is the manometry test?

Ah ok, my barium was clear, but to be on the safe side I'm going to press for the manometry too, as having it done is the only way I can be eligible for LINX surgery.

A manometry test is when a tube is inserted through your nostril and down your esophagus . It is hooked to a computer and it takes readings of your swallowing and motility function to determine if you have or will have problems in swallowing, it can also measure whether you have a weak les. At some point they make you swallow water . The tube has measuring intervals and from there if you are having the ph 24 hour monitoring test , they can determine at what point that tube is to be inserted so that when you have reflux it will be able to measure it. In uk , we don't have the bravo test, it is usually done by this method where you keep a tube in for 24 hours to measure reflux.

Thanks so much for clarifying. I have been on my GERD diet for six months now and have experienced alot of improvement with what goes on in my stomach. I do have continuing issues though with the lump in the throat as well as feeling mild to moderate pressure in my esophagus. Can't say that I am ever in actual pain. However I have found that the pressure and lump issues worsen greatly if my clothes put even the slightest pressure on my chest. Hence, as the weather has been getting colder, I have just discovered that over the head sweaters will just not work this winter. Cardigans are the only thing I can wear. Wonder if anyone has had any experience with symptoms worsening as the result of a pressure point. Thanks all!
