I'm having new symptoms and I dont know what it is. My main symptoms are chest pain with the arm and neck feeling (both sided), shortness of breath, immense stomach pain. I went to the ER today. A heart attack and blood clot in my lungs are ruled out. They also found thickening of my air ways. However, could it be gerd?

It could be. Have you ever tried taking a PPI like Nexium or Protonix or Prilosec?

Immense stomach pain may also point to an HPylori infection. Have you thought about looking into an upper GI?

Thanks for your reply. I might have to call my GI then. No I haven't tried those meds. I assume you need a script for these?

Prilosec is over the counter, but many people say that the prescription ones work better, if your insurance will cover them.

It might be best to just check with your GI doc.

It could be gerds. I have the chest pains that will some times cover the shoulder neck and back and I have gerds not exactly claiming that's what u have but those are symptoms of it. Also the shortness of breath too. Have been to the ER several times for those two symptoms. I was going to the ER AT LEAST once a week for about three months before I was actually diagnosed with gerds/ hiatal hernia. And I have been about 5-6 times for those symptoms since being diagnosed. I go because it just get scary when it comes to your breathing and chest pain. I do take two 40mg protonix a day but it doesn't really stop either one of those problems for me. Good luck and Lord knows I hope you are quickly relieved of these symptoms, its a terrible way to live. I'm trying to fix myself holistically because I do not want this to be something I just have to learn to live with.

Yes that's exactly how my chest pain feels like. I hope it's just something that simple. ER ruled out heart attack and blood clots. They said my air ways were thickened and I don't know what that means. I was waiting for a call back from my GP but she didn't call me. I bought the over the counter meds to see if it would relieve this. So far so good I woke up pain free but I don't want to jinx it. I will still mention this to my GI next time I see him. I never had stomach issues before so if I was to have gerd that would definitely be new to me.

How do you get diagnosed? Endoscopy? Do you have to be awake while swallowing the scope?? I only know coloscopy and they put you to sleep. What also throws me off is that I'm having immense stomach pain, so much that I cannot move. Maybe that's a hint. My GP dismissed it.

Yes it could be gerd. You really need to see a gastro doctor who could recommend tests.

Then when you've had the tests you'll have a better idea what could be wrong.

You said that you woke up symptom free yesterday so maybe it's gone and it was just a virus or stomach bug.

Well I've been taking Zantac and Tums. I took one Zantac this night too. So far I was almost pain-free.

Yes I will definitely bring it up to my GI.

So my GI gave me Nexium and I asked for a scope. I hate scopes but I'm desperate.

So I took my first Nexium yesterday and in the evening I got watery diarrhea! At first I was constipated (which is normal for me at the moment) then I laid down to sleep. I woke up and had to go! Ever since I have diarrhea. Is this from Nexium? Should I still take it? Will the diarrhea stop?

Glad to read you requested a scope?  NEXIUM may increase your risk of getting severe diarrhea. This diarrhea may be caused by an infection (Clostridium difficile) in your intestines

The proton pump inhibitor’s major ingredient is magnesium, a mineral used as a laxative and to clear the bowels before certain diagnostic tests and surgery. PPIs and diarrhea are also linked because the drug blocks the production of stomach acid and might also inhibit defense mechanisms against Clostridium difficile (mentioned above) bacteria.

If you are on long-term proton pump inhibitors or gastric acid suppressants and develop diarrhea that persists for more than three days, see your doctor. A change in medication could make a positive change in your health.

I already made an appointment. I think my GI hates it when I tell him what to do. Well I can see what he says if I mention it.

So I'm taking Nexium and Zantac. I seem to tolerate Nexium now. Since I'm taking them and I would get tested/scoped, does it give you false results? I want them to find something and don't want to get an erroneous result because of the meds I'm taking.

Also, since I seem to be pain-free when taking Zantac, can I assume that it is gerd/acid stomach? I need to take it every 12 hours (150mg) otherwise the pain reoccurs and it's awful.

Is gerd curable?
