 went to see a new gastro doc today - hadn't been in a few years and he wants to scope me - so I made an apt for Monday morning.  he said he could give me a combo of versed and fentanyl before the procedure to relax me.  then use propofol during.  doesn't this seem like a lot of drugs at once?  when I had my hand surgery I took half a klonopin beforehand and that was fine.  guess I should just do that again.  I was reading about those three together and read about some women having respiratory issues with those 3 together. 

kitt - what do you think?

i'm a little nervous already because I worry about complications from like the biopsy part or having some kind of spasm afterwards.  ha  stupid I know.

When we have an endoscopy in the UK we tend not to have anything unless we insist. I opted to stay awake and not take anything . May I say I won't be doing that again in a hurry. My surgeon said that he'll scope me in the new year if I feel that the wrap hasn't worked. I told him that I want knocking out.
Ask the doctor about the mixture of drugs if your not happy.
But can I suggest that you have something that they offer you so your out of it.

I have had two awake and two sedated. I will take the sedated any day. You don't remember a thing about the procedure and feel good when you wake up. I think the cocktail you mentioned is what I had last time. Don't fret about the biopsy or spasms. Its really pretty easy.

Hmm.

Everyone is different, but this seems like a lot. I presume this is for an upper endoscopy.

I've had many colonoscopies (Versed/Fentanyl combo - and one time with Benadryl as well because I need more than most to go under (or get into the awake, but I don't care mode.)

I recently had a concurrent upper and lower endoscopy - the upper done first. Started with the Benadryl, followed by Versed/Fen combo.

They offered Propofol alone - which is "cleaner as they said" but I decided against it because of additional costs with an anesthesiologist.

I have never heard of using V, F, and P altogether.

Perhaps you could ask the rationale for all three? There may be a reason that I'm not aware of. Klonopin alone would definitely not do it for me.

The combo I mentioned worked perfectly.

I've had it done several times with all 3. With the versed you will be a bit loopier longer and won't remember anything.

My GI has started using propofol alone to keep the after effects minimal. When they haved used just propofol in the past they had to add something else as I am harder to put out and not fight against them during the scope.
