Hi Pink, I had reflux pretty much all day. I had had it and the GI sent me to the surgeon. (20++++ yrs ppis used to work, then minimal help)
The surgeon ordered UGI, gastric emptying films, and manometry, then said nothing was conclusive, he couldn't do surgery at that point, Huh! What's wrong with these tests. I thought they think I'm exaggerating how miserable I felt, or I'm loo loo... Quality of life was suffering.... ANYWAY TWO IMPORTANT things .. I was then sent to an Ex MAYO clinic professor , for the impedence test which "woke everybody up" as it was HIGHLY positive confirming the constant acid reflux. This doc re-ordered the manometry, which sowd less dysfunction, but still some...then THE NEXT IMPORTANT thing I found out from this GI doc was that one of THE MAJOR CAUSES , if not the major cause of swallowing motility dysfunction is REFLUX... Go figure. We put two and two together and I had my wrap Aug 2013 and I'm soo soo glad I did. I rarely have anything that feels like reflux, or even heartburn... Sleep fine, can eat many things I couldn't before, like bananas and oatmeal which used to give me worse reflux.. Now I enjoy them... Of course I went through the many of the same recovery issues as you have probably read, but I'm here to say I'm glad I did it and wish I had done it earlier. My likes and dislikes have changed, I eat smaller meals, but have stayed the same weight up or down 5 lbs since surgery. Lots of smoothies while progressing to solids. My GI said also the stomach has it's own set of hormones (specifically GI type hormones) which add to what we like and don't like, how hungry we are, etc. I was in hospital about 24 hr post op, went home, off work 2 weeks, then returned to my part time job. Doctor would have let me go back after one week. No thank you , I needed two weeks. Not too much belly pain at all, but swallowing was painful at first. My eyes were bigger than my ability to swallow, so I had my moments, but just backed off if I tried some food too fast, or thought it was okay, and found out otherwise.... So about 5 months now , and I eat most anything except dry, tuff, or too sticky stuff...enjoy my food. Look at this as a journey and trust you will get the correct answer from wise docs.... Make sure they're experienced and have the practical experience too. My doc had done about 2000 Nissen Fundo's ( I had a hiatal hernia fixed too) . He was experienced with laparoscopic and robotic surgery ( I had laparoscopic) 5 small healing and fading lines. Amazing what they can do. Please keep us informed. GB. Lois
