A partial wrap only "partially" encompasses your esophagus with the fundus of the stomach...either 180 or 270 degrees depending on your surgeons preference. Partial wraps are usually used when the patient has swallowing or motility issues combined with the GERD/LPR disorders as it provides for a looser yet still effective solution to the reflux problem. There are also surgeons that just prefer to use the partial wrap instead of the full Nissen procedure however the full Nissen wrap is the standard for treatment of chronic GERD/LPR.
In my research prior to having the Nissen last year, it wasn't apparent to me what the recovery differences were between the two. At the core, they are still major thoracic surgical procedures, both involve a careful diet during recovery, and the same surgical techniques/tools are used for both the full and partial wraps. The only difference is that a partial wrap doesn't encircle the esophagus completely. Otherwise, the testing, procedure and recovery are identical.
