(EPIC) Failed my manometry; Going to try with sedation next and questions

I tried to get my manometry test, but I don't know how you people do it. I tried it 3 times, including numbing my throat, but my gag reflex is so horrible I couldn't keep it in--they got 1/3 of it in with the numbing. Tried to keep my mind off of it, but my throat wouldn't listen =(;

They said they would try sedation next but told me I would be awake when they start the test.

Has anyone ever done this with sedation due to bad gagging reflex=[ I'm afraid i'll going nuts when they wake me, and tell me to swallow water.

Also the 24-ph..I guess this is much better than the manometry..sicne the wire like what..4 times thinner or something?

I hate my life =P

I tried 2 times to do the manometry and was not successful so they tried sedation and still not successful. The dr originally said they could not proceed with the surgery without the test so I tried the 4th time and still not successful. The dr had me do a video swallow test and decided my reflex was so bad that he needed to proceed with the surgery and it was the best thing I did. I had surgery on feb 7, 2014 and have not taken a single reflex med and no more tums. I have not had any heartburn and have been able to sleep in my bed on my back for the first time in 4 years.

The dr never said anything about a 24 hr ph test.

Hey Jessi,

with sedation, how far did you get. I figure they were able to put it down your throat, but couldn't do the swallowing test?

W/o sedation I got the first swallow done (to get it down my throat), but it was too unbearable.

I just managed it on the third try - it wasn't gagging that I struggled with but pain. I had been told the technician would be gentle and go at my pace, but he didn't. After I managed it I realised on the 2 times I had failed I had actually been very close - another few swallows - from it being in position. Would have been helpful if they had told me how close I was!

I was so uncomfortable that I thought keeping it in would be an issue, but I found I began to cope after a couple of hours. I was very aware of it for the whole 24 hours though and didn't sleep much. I was also very symptomatic but the results were entirely normal sad

Not something I ever want to repeat!

The got it down during sedation but as soon as I started coming out of sedation I started gagging and retching and couldn't breathe the had to remove it immediately.

It's usually some nurse trying to shove the tube down fast. Then it curls up and goes in the trachea and you choke. Ask for a doctor. There's a trick to bending the tube a little, putting in in the nose and then twisting it 1/4 turn.

After 4 tries, including doctor, the tube just kept curling. The doc finally got a pediatric endo scope to go down. Then he threaded a wire through it, pulled the scope. Then he ran the tube down over the wire and pulled out the wire. I'm a horrible gagger too.

It wasn't fun. I knew I absolutely had to have the surgery because of paraesophageal hernia (stomach in chest), so I tried extremely hard to cooperate. The tubes are just too thin and flexible, which is why they curl so badly.

Alice I had a dr try as we'll the problem is I have terrible gag reflex and they couldn't get past it. They got the tube all the way down under sedation but when I came out of the sedation my body couldn't handle the tube and gag reflex so bad they had to remove the tube immediately. However I was still able to have the surgery after I had a swallow test the dr said that was all he needed. I hope you are able to have the surgery.
