CPAP and NF Procedure after surgery

Hello,

I will be bringing my CPAP machine with me (it is for sleep apnea) to the hospital for after surgery. Has anyone had problems with using one of these after surgery? I know we are not supposed to use straws or suck in air, and a CPAP blows in a continuous stream of air into the airway. I haven't heard anything about this and was wondering what I should expect when using my machine.

Good luck with your surgery on Thursday! We'll be here ready and waiting for you to post for the first time after your procedure, so we can welcome you to the wrapped club!

Another member, Joy (couchtater) uses a c-pap, and I believe she had no problems post-op. It won't cause gas the way a straw does, because you're not swallowing the air into your stomach.

I dropped Joy an email, asking her to respond to your concern. Hopefully she'll get the email and be on soon to reply.

Hi! Denise told me about your question. I used to post here quite a bit before and after my surgery. If you have any more questions you can click on my email icon.

I was able to use my cpap after surgery. My doctors were fine with it. I couldn't use the oxygen tube they had on me after surgery at the same time though. It was too uncomfortable. So I took it off and just used the cpap to sleep with.

Good luck with the surgery! I just had nf done last month and use cpap (AHI of 90). I let the respitory guy know and gave it to the assistant before surgery. Woke up with it on in recovery. No problems. Surgen said it would put some extra air in my stomach and it does. He said many of his patients with cpap are far more flatulant (sp) after surgery and I have found that to be true. Although I cannot burp the air does find a way out. eyes The air pressure did not affect the surgery at all and visit with surgen showed everything going well.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I am bringing my CPAP with me, so I'm not sure if they will have it on me in recovery or just when I get to my room. I will definitely be posting post-op to let everyone know how I'm doing. Everyone has had some awesome advice and have prepared me so well with all sorts of answers to my questions.

They usually ask you to bring it with if you use CPap therapy. When I had my torn esophagus surgery at the University of Iowa they had started using a full face BiPap for all post surgical and ICU patients who had any issues with O2 depletion.

Thank you bill. I will be bringing my CPAP with me. Tomorrow morning is the big day. I didn't sleep very well last night. It was nerves. My stomach is hurting something fierce this morning. I cannot wait until this goes away. For me, hopefully, it will be nor more pills or pain. (Of course there will be surgery pain), but that will hopefully be a pain that I can deal with more than this pain.

I'll write in here as soon as I am able after surgery tomorrow.
