24 Hours from endoscope - Trying to remain calm.

I think its just rare generally. If you're young I think you are much less likely to have it as you probably havent had decades of silent reflux attacking the esophagus.

Id be more worried about the endoscopy itself, I've had two without sedation and they aren't particularly enjoyable lol.

I only have my own anecdotal evidence, but I'm 33 and have had pretty severe symptoms the past 4 years, exhausted all prescriptions available to me without significant benefit, have chronic esophagitis and gastritis, and still no sign of Barrett's. In the last six months I've had two endoscopies and been on antibiotics and have tried every PPI out there including Dexilant.

Based on what my doctor tells me and what I've researched, it still seems pretty rare. I wouldn't worry too much until you get the results back.

Hey guys and gals wanted to give y'all an update.

Well the actual procedure want the best thing ever. I don't think they nearly sedated me enough because I have never gagged so much in my life lol. Good news though Despite chronic symptoms my esophagus is in perfect condition. No inflammation, no redness, no erosion or ulcers, no gastritis. Just a slightly relaxed LES. GI told me just keep doing what I'm doing and to continue my RX

Sorry to hear about the gagging though; I've had some scopes when I also wasn't sedated enough, and it was a really uncomfortable experience. Definitely not one I want to go through again.

If you ever need to have another one, mention that the level of sedation last time wasn't enough - hopefully they'll increase the dose so you'll be more comfortable. On my last scope, I told them I needed proper sedation because I gag really badly, and they didn't quite believe me... well, it was so awful they put a note on my medical file to make sure I'm really sedated next time.

I got an IV as well but aside from feeling kinda tired I felt pretty cognitive through it. I'm sure everyone reacts differently but I feel like it write of pretty quick. I was asking the doc what he saw as soon as the score was it of my mouth. Had some apple juice a couple minutes after and went to dinner right after. My throat felt uncomfortable for the rest of the day but I feel fine today

I heard all kinds of horrible endoscopy stories but yours sounds so smooth and perfect. I understand that different people react differently to sedation (and to endoscopy). I have never been under anesthetics before and I hope they don't give me too much of it. (I know it's rare but still...) Did they take biopsy as well? Again, Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

BTW, I have a pretty stupid one. So, I was told that I will be receiving an "IV sedation". But I thought IV is for general anesthesia and sedation is through oral route (pills)?? Also, how sedated did you feel throughout the procedure? and afterwards? Could you eat or move around? I know it's probably a bad time to bombard you with questions. And thanks so much!

I've always been sedated either by IV, or by an injection in my hand. After the sedative is administered, they have sprayed the back of my throat to make it numb. With the exception of one time, I don't remember anything. I recall getting injected, my throat sprayed, being told to close my eyes and breathe deeply, and then "waking up" when it was over in the recovery room. (apparently I was never truly asleep, I just don't remember much of it due to the sedative's effects) Once I was awake; however, I was fine. A little bit of a sore throat, but otherwise I felt back to normal. I could drink, eat, get out of bed and walk, etc. They do recommend that you take care (or avoid, if possible) operating heavy machinery, signing any legal documents, and driving for the next 24 hours until everything has totally worn off.

I was also given the option of no sedative and just the numbing spray, but I have a terribly sensitive gag reflex. Out of the question!

I've always been out cold for my three scopes. During the second, I woke up and asked when we were getting started. LOL. I can't imagine FEELING it. Yikes!

Joey man! Don't sweat Barrett's. I have it and I don't let it get to me. I know I've had it a year, but it's probably been longer. As far as I know, my barium swallow went well today and there's no sign of cancer. People that get it and THEN get cancer is actually a really low percentage.

I was glad to see your esophagus is doing so well. Take care, man.
