Lifting grandchild after Nissen

Hi I am four weeks nearly post op from Nissen, and doing great, just bit worried about babysitting. My grandson is 19 months and weighs 30lb, worried about picking him up, my Dr. said after six weeks, but I have read that it can be longer, any advise please. I don't go back to see my surgeon until 2nd June, which will be nearly nine weeks. confused

I would say its better safe than sorry, so avoid it until you've seen the surgeon, they are the expert when it comes to the surgery.

Also I'd try a more gradual process, going from lifting nothing to 30lbs could be too much, but if you start off getting used to lifting about 10lb then gradually relax the restrictions you're probably less likely to blow your wrap.

Thank you for replying. I think you are so right. I see the surgeon on 2nd June, it will be worth waiting just for peace of mind. I have been so worried about it, frightened it could undo all the good. I feel so much better since my surgery.

You don't realise how much the reflux etc is affecting your life and making you feel so unwell. I will try lifting small things and building my strength up. At present I am not even vacuuming!!

It's great your feeling so well after only 4 weeks, a lot of people come to this forum struggling with the recovery but I think most cases are like yours and see benefits immediately.

Thanks Andy,

It is comforting to hear good recovery stories. I know the forum has really helped me. I am eating most things apart from bread and beef, just small portions and lots of chewing. I have also lost about 11lbs, so that makes you feel better too. I hope you are doing ok too.

I had to pick my kids up after 2 weeks, I had no choice. They're both 22kg, so almost 50lb.

I didn't try picking them straight up in front of me as I think my stomach would have torn, but I did pick them up from my side, starting from them standing next to me.

I wouldn't advise it, but it seemed better.

Oh poor you, I bet you were worried about picking them up, glad it went ok. My son has arranged extra time off work now, so I won't be babysitting until after my post op check up. Feel better waiting, but understand sometimes you have choice.

My keyhole incisions haven't quite healed yet, four weeks today. Did everything work out ok for you.

Hi Julie,

I think you are wise to wait until you see your surgeon. I expect he/she will release you to pick them up, but better safe than sorry. Be sure to use good mechanics when you pick up something/someone heavy. I have had moments when I've picked up something very heavy and experienced some pain at the wrap site. It was a wake-up call. I know my limits. My core strength isn't that great, so I think it puts more pressure on the wrap than if it were stronger. Use your knees, and keep the weight close to your body.

You will do just fine! I babysit my grandkids, too. It's fun and exhausting! And it definitely requires some heavy lifting!

Thanks Denise, will definitely use your tip about lifting, didn't think before but great idea. I am doing so well, can't help worrying that I might undo the good work. But I will be really careful.

I have showers but would love a bath, when is it ok to have one. My incisions are almost healed, still some scabbing and coupled of stitches still there.

Hi, yes, I was terrified! :)

The incisions take ages to heal, mine are still pink and the main central incision still resembles a belly button rather than a smooth scar.

Apparently when the scars are white on the outside they will also be healed inside, but that can take a while.

I don't know if everything has worked out for me or not at the moment, I'm going through a very rough patch.. Thanks for asking.
