Hello Guys & Girls i am having a endoscopy done on June 12th and omg I'm so scared .. i suffer from SEVERE HIGH ANXIETY!!! and i feel like i will panic during the procedure and I'm thinking the worst is this procedure safe I'm scared to look online and or see video. i tried to see videos on youtube regarding the procedure and it freaked me out i couldn't finish watching the video :( has anyone done this procedure with high anxiety ?? plz help

Hi, I'm right with you!! I am scheduled for 6-6-2014 and also suffer from severe anxiety. Everyone is telling me it's NOTHING and I'm worried for no reason but they don't have anxiety issues!! Don't watch a video!! I didn't and wont!! That will make it way worse. I am very nervous but they do millions of these each day w/ nothing going wrong. Just think positive, I know it's hard- believe me I am in the same exact boat as you!!

first off GOODLUCK WITH YOUR PROCEDURE!!!! and please tell me how it goes once you feel better i want to know if they put you to sleep or are you partially awake.. and let me know if they give you any anxiety meds before hand. and honestly i think we both are BLOWING EVERYTHING out of proportion lol typical for a anxiety sufferer to always over analyze everything lol.. YOU WILL DO GOOD I KNOW you will !

Ive been through 2 endoscopies without sedation and suffered from severe anxiety at the time. They both went smoothly although werent pleasent. They only last a few minutes, i just focussed on relaxing my body and breathing slowly, this also helped me not to wretch so much as the tube goes down the throat.

If you are worried you can always choose sedation, then you probably wont even feel a thing.

I think of it a bit like childbirth, ok its not pleasent, but if it was that bad people would never have more than one kid :p so the fact I had 2 without sedation tells u that it isnt that bad :) literally only 3 minutes of the strange sensation of someone poking around inside you

Like the posters before am v anxious about the procedure-caused I think by my observing it done as a student nurse approx 30 years ago(!) I tell myself it MUST surely be better now??? I've managed to avoid one all this time despite having been on PPIs for 7 years after two occasions when I had v scary oesophageal spasm ( five years apart) which terrified me( and stopped me drinking scotch sadly;))
Been pretty symptom free until approx 6 weeks ago when had gastritis and oesophagitis which after doubling PPI to 20 mg a day from 10 I was on seemed to settle it down after three weeks -although last couple of days have had a bit of oesophageal pain so praying that it isn't going to become problematic again-particularly as I am off to Glastonbury festival again after an 18 year break (!) in a few weeks time!!
Anyway point in making is I totally get the anxiety about the endoscopy which I inevitably will have to face one day-also looking for reassurance.
Forum is really helpful when you see what others are going through.
I'm sure you will be fine but for me I would want as many drugs as they can give me!!! No way without sedation and the only people I have spoken to that have had it without have said never again

I also suffer from severe anxiety. I had my first endoscopy done late last month. I had mine done with sedation. And honestly, it was a piece of cake! There is absolutely nothing to worry about with it. I barely remember anything about it and the ONLY problem I had afterwards was a mildly sore throat that lasted maybe 2 hours. It's a completely safe procedure and you will be okay! Good luck!!

I also suffer from severe anxiety. I had my first endoscopy done late last month. I had mine done with sedation. And honestly, it was a piece of cake! @mackenzie16 lol your post was quite amusing i called my doctor and told him i have high anxiety and they might give me the sedation medication so i don't freak out lol and did they find anything wrong with your stomach after that ???

@andy1986 omg you took it like a champ i woudl be so scared to do that and what did they find after they did the endoscopy???

@JenniferCHerr did they find anything after your endoscopy ? or are you waiting on your results and how do you feel after it was done ?? im curious to find out what happen since your endoscopy was scheduled for yesterday

If you're anxious about the procedure, let the doctor know.

In my experience, doctors are quite accomodating. If you explain your situation, they will try to make you at ease during the procedure. I've requested sedation during my endoscopies, and it has been a piece of cake with that.

I had it done two weeks ago and I promise its not even bad!! I was sedated and it was over in five mins. The doctor told me you swallow food larger than the tube that goes down your throat. Don't read horror stories. I have gastritis and I keep readin horror stories and my anxiety is sky high

oh wow 2 weeks ago and after the procedure did you feel dizzy or something and were you okay to go back to work the following day ??? and what do you mean by horror stories? i would hate myself if i went online to read all the negative i think everything has a negative and like you said with anxiety it just makes it worst lol

Off at the min with bein in pain with gastritis but trust me I'm a wimp and I promise it doesn't hurt they spray your throat with some discusting spray and then its over by time you know it. If your sedated like me you can't leave hosp till two hours after x

lol im a wimp to when it comes to major stuff like that lol and sucks that u have gastritis :( hopefully they can control it with new meds or something. does gastritis run in your family ?  and thank you so much for all the info. omg mine is in 2 days hahaha

Mean people sayin how bad it is and its worst thing they have ever had done. But that's not the case. I read them all time
about people never recovering from gastritis and it takin years to heal and its made me so upset and anxious :( I don't wanna be in pain that long. X

No gastritis doesn't run In my family I had my appendix removed three months ago and had two severe infections so was on anti biotics for five weeks so that's what they think has caused it

back in 2008 they removed my gallblader because i had gallstones and before they took my gall bladder out i had acid refulx and i had alot of pain in my belly i couldn't eat that much alot of burning in my chest , etc etc and from what i remmeber i think i was anxious getting the operation and that procedure took like 40 min or 1 hour lol i was sedated for it.

oh dang im sorry to hear that. :( hope you do get better in the long run and get that stupid gastritis treated :)

well i went to the gi doctor and told them that for the past 1 year or so i keep getting really bad acide reflux alot of belly pain alot of bloating, upset stomach, constipation. they are going to check for h pilory, ulcers, and other stuff

Good Morning omg it was super easy, they sedated me and i was done in like an hour i think the procedure lasted like 10 - 15 minutes from what i was told and the rest of the time was just sleeping . but before i was put to sleep i did have a panic attack lol well not relaly but i was shaking/trembling and very scared
