Help. Elavil made LPR/vocal paresis worse

I'm so sorry to hear this made you worse! How long did that last, gasping for breath? I was going to ask for it at my next appt. but will probably chicken out taking it. I, so hate meds.

I also thought of taking Elavil, as I have read in one post here that it may help with sensory neuropathy cough which I "think" I have! I'm not really sure, I might research more about it or talk to my doctor (hope she'll consider it)
My problem is throat clearing and cough plus shortness of breath.

My symptoms are often dull but annoying. It escalates when I think too mich about it, but seems to go away when I am busy or if I'm talking or eating. I also don't have problems with sleeping. I sleep perfectly everyday and any of them doesnt bother me at all!

I dont know when will I take the Elavil, as I have just started taking magnesium supplement aling with vit d3. As of now, I feel a little improvement. Ill wait and see after a few weeks!

The Elavil is not for  LPR. I have vocal chord paresis, vagus nerve damage AND LPR. Since I have those 3 things, I was misdiagnosed  by many doctors. It took me over 30 years to finally find the doctor who diagnosed me correctly and treated me correctly.

The Elavil is for the nerve damage, which works very well for me, but I still have LPR, therefore still coughing. But when the reflux meds were working, along with the Elavil the cough was gone. I am going to have the Nissen surgery in July, but I will continue with the Elavil.

Good Luck to you and find a doctor that is an expert in LPR and neurogenic cough.

I have just also been diagnosed with vocal cord paresis. It's been quite a struggle for me, dealing with both the physical and mental of it all.
I had seen several ENTs, all of which told me to just take Prevacid. When I was not getting better, I finally went to a specialist at UCLA who diagnosed me recently with paresis.
I'm on Elavil, which I think is making my anxieties worse. I keep having dry mouth, and I get the sensation that I'm going to choke on my own saliva (though I'm sure a lot of this is just all in my head). I don't really think the nerve damage is getting better. I started on 25mg at night, but have had to reduce it to 10mg because it's making me severely tired and dizzy.
I was also told I need speech therapy, but it's been hard to find a good speech language pathologist who knows about paresis. Mostly, I only find vocal coaches who don't know my condition.

Anyone have success through speech therapy?

Eleanor, what kind of sensation do you get when you're short of breath? Is it a "too much mucus stuck" feeling?

I am currently on 50mgs, I started on 10 kept having to increase it.  It is hard to say how long it took to work, as I was on the other meds as well. It seems to be working pretty good now, and I have been on this dose for a couple of months. The true test for me will be after I have the surgery, which hopefully is this month. No I was never advised to to have speech therepy. I actually have my bachelor's degree in Speech Pathology, although it was a long time ago, and didn't go on to Grad school. I don't recall learning about therapy for a person with vagus nerve damage or vocal chord paresis. Look for a therapist that specilizes in Dysphagia, that probably is your best bet.
