Hi All!!
I am now an official member of the Successful Nissan club! I had my surgery on the 8th of September and came home from the hospital the next day. It was robotic surgery. I went into the OR crying because I was so scared. However, I didn't have to be! Now that it is done and over with I see that I am ok.
What helped? I realized that there are thousands of woman and men getting their stomachs modified, removed or re partitioned through gastric bypass surgery and they are fine! Once I realized that I was ok! My greatest fear was the wrap being too tight but my surgeon is excellent and I trusted him. I do even more after going through this! He is an excellent surgeon.
He had another expert in robotics there in the OR with him. This guy is a Physicians Assistant but he does nothing but robotics. He took my hand when we were on our way into the OR !! I needed that so badly and he knew it. Later, he came up to see me and I told him how much I appreciated it! He said (surprisingly) "I didn't think you would remember that !!". (They had just given me Versed which should have knocked me out). I was so thankful and later he invited me to actually SEE the robot in the OR as they operate!
I do remember my pain was not that well controlled once the block wore off. On top of that they had to put in a drain because my liver suffered some "fissures" which means that the retractor tore into it. I had the drain for 5 days and then they took that out! Thank God !!! I was very appreciative that he was being cautious enough and put the drain in . (You don't want bile leaking into the abdomen). He also repaired my hiatal hernia. While in the hospital they were giving me morphine I.V every two hours but after awhile the nurses talked me into swallowing (yuck!!!) pills. I managed to do that without any discomfort much to my surprise! They helped me more than the two hours that the morphine did. When I came home was when I really got pain relief! I was able to go back on my Opana for my back and added Norco to it which took away my pain 100%. However, I suffered from terrible night sweats from the Norco which left me changing my PJ's three times during the night from sweating. I was very happy once I could not have to take the Norco!
Ok..PURE HONESTY: one of the symptoms I suffered from that is getting better is the ability to take a deep breath! I am now 12 days post op and breathing is getting a little easier!! I would be curious to ask if anyone else had this problem ?? All in all I am doing better as each day goes by,
Now..get this....IT IS AWESOME TO NOT HAVE TO RE-TASTE YOUR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER!!!! The surgery took care of the reflux and I pray it lasts at least 10 years. Plus, I was on PPI's (Omeprazole) 40 mg twice a day before the surgery and now I am on ZERO PPI's !! Life is good! I am still experiencing some difficulties swallowing but it seems to be diminishing. I realized there that I had a pretty good sized hernia and that could be why it hurts so much. Add to that tons of scar tissue! In fact when I woke up I asked him why my right side wasn't hurting anymore! He said that's because you had tons of scartissue that I took out. I thanked him!! I don't miss that pain at all !! It was there for at least 8 years.
I am glad I had this surgery! Thank you Denise too for your encouragement !! I would be happy to help others and try to stay on this forum. If anyone needs to talk you can try getting through via this forum or my email which is
[email protected]. Feel free to contact me but put in subject line : Nissan candidate" so I will know it is not some random person!
LASTLY: THANK YOU SO MUCH DENISE FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT!!! You were instrumental in making me feel better about
the surgery!
