Sever pain 3 month after surgery

My dad had his hiatus hernia repair done on May 27 2014 and the recovery is a rough on he had 2 good days of little pain but all the other days have been terrible.He gets sever chest pain burning in his stomach also pains in his back and left side.He is unable to tolerate any soilds he has been on clear liquids and ensures when he tries a little solid purée food it gives him sever spasms and sever chest pains.He has been to the hospital three time due to this they say it's just the way the recovery is but now this week we go to see his surgeon for testing to see if everything is healing.I was wondering if anyone who is in there 3 months or later have any suggestions or help on what they did to make the recovery proses a little less painful.Any help would be great really hate seeing him in pain.

Hi Madden,

The pain you're describing isn't typical. Yes, there can be some pain, but generally it's very manageable. The fact that your father went to the hospital several times with the pain indicates that he's not having a typical recovery.

It is true that each of us heals in our own way, and the recovery takes about six months for most of the healing and a year for the rest. He's still in the midst of the healing process.

I am glad to hear that he is seeing his surgeon to get a handle on what's causing the excessive pain. Please let us know what he finds out. I wish I could offer some tips. Since he's only taking liquids, it's not what he's eating.

how is your dad doing now? I am sorry to hear about his tough recovery! It is horrible to go through all this with having the surgery and then be in pain for so much longer than expected.

I had the nissen done about 3 and a half months ago, and am experiencing similar pains and also cannot eat much. As of yet no answers from the doctors!

He is doing a little better.They did test on him and they have no explanation on why he is getting this sever pain.The tests were a barium swallow test, a scope down the esophagus and dailating his esophagus as well, a Doppler and ct scan all showed normal.Now he is on pain management to control the sever pain.For gas we use gas-x and oval for infants and buscapan.For pain liquid Tylenol or Advil.If your not eating try a clear liquid diet and then full fluid diet and if you try to eat solid try a mechanical diet it's best to go online for more info on a mechanical diet.How I feel about this operation is that it's a journey in recovery and every little improvement is a step in the right direction. Also trying things that work for you.Little steps are the best thing right now don't rush it .



(For the liquid diet we used the ensure high calorie and clear boost)
