taking prevacid found alternatives need advice please

hello, I am new here and have some ?'s. I have recently been reading the book "alternative cures" and also take prevacid for my nagging heartburn. I am considering taking slippery elm along with some aloe gel. Are there any known interactions with either of these and prevacid? my goal is to wein myself off of prevacid. thanks

as much as i think all of us would love to be able to answer such questions -- it's virtually impossible, as virtually all herbal "supplementation" is empirically reviewed or objectively tested.

I think from what I've read that 'slippery elm' is a very good herb, however to recommend any herbal remedy and a medication is definitely not in my scope of expertise. My suggestion would be to talk to either your own Dr. or a Pharmacist re this!

ckgMD, what did your answer mean? :) BTW, where is your practice and what is your specialty? Is it in the gastrointestinal field? Just wondering...

I have tried Aloe Vera Juice in the past while taking Prevacid and it seemed to have helped, have also tried Papain chewalble enzymes and obtained some relief.

The bottom line is, somethings work for some but not for all. I personally believe that most must change their food intake to achieve the greatest results; supplements could possibly help w/change in diet.

I have tried many herbs,supplements etc...., but still i'm taking Prolisec. :{ I have eaten lowfat plain & vanilla Yogurt for the last three days only to have reflux symptoms as I type. But, some say Yogurt cure reflux for them.....:{ Some say apples are not good for reflux, but don't bother me at all (Granny Smith).

We just have to figure out what works for us individually through trial & error.

Also may I ask where you practice at?

You may ask, but is it good Internet etiquette to ask someone to reveal their identity if they haven't done so of their own accord?

If they wish not to be revealed, then how do they politiely continue in the discussion? By saying, "I don't want you to know who I am"?

I suspect we will not hear from the good doctor again, but I hope I am wrong.

I am sorry you feel that way. I am also sorry that the Dr. did not answer. You must remember this was his, or her choice to add the M.D. after their name.

This is why I preface what I say in many cases to check with your Dr. first. There may be some people who feel that because he lists himself as an MD that his advice is okay, because he is a Dr.

I worked in nursing for many years beginning as a candy striper when I was only 14 yrs. old. This does not give my thoughts precedence over any others here on this forum.

I'm here as a person who has GERD and to seek info and support, as well as try to offer it.
