PPI and delayed gastric emptying

There are many side effects from PPIs, I have been on them for ten years until now, 2 weeks post Nissen and 1 week off the PPI - no more reflux -hooray! Hopefully now my body can recover from this miserable drug.
Magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiency, can lead to anaemia and osteoporosis. Joint problems amongst others.

Have you been checked for delayed gastric emptying? Symptoms of delayed gastric emptying can include: LPR/reflux, abdominal distention, burping, bloating, abdominal fullness, weight loss, stomach pains, nausea and in worse cases vomiting & dehydration. There are different stages of delayed gastric emptying, so your symptoms would depend on how slow the gastric emptying is.

Many different things can cause delayed gastric emptying including a virus, surgeries, and even medication. It happened to me after taking omeprazole. Doctors unfortunately do not recognized PPIs as one of the medications that can cause delayed gastric emptying.

I know your pain, I've had stomach issues on and off for over 2 years as well. Diet is very important when trying to recover from gastritis, my list of things that I can't eat during a flare up is extensive and I still don't really know for sure whats safe to eat atm. What sort of things are you eating?

I take a variety of supplements as well, might be worth trying. DGL, slippery elm, PepzinGI and ginger for nausea are my favourites.

I wouldn't worry about cancer, I have exactly the same problems as you, on strong PPIs, Zantac and even amitriptyline and I still frequently get nausea, stomach pain and gnawing in my upper abdomen.

Have you tried carafate? It is a stomach coating agent for gastritis, personally I find it makes me worse, but for most people it helps.

I've had a lot of tests, but never stomach emptying. It could be my problem, but Ive always been a big eater so not sure. I'm usually hungry 1-2 hours after a meal but have to stop myself overeating and causing stomach pain. Sometimes I wish they would just remove my stomach.

i was recomended to you related to a post of mine on slow gastric emptying.

I had my Nissen 6 months ago, (I had occasional regurgutation)

Since the Surgery, I have acid and burning, and also near constant regurgitation of food. these last 6 months i was convinced the surgery had failed, After all, how could my relfux go from 20 to 120 after the surgery and was taking 30mg of lansoprazol and now need 80mg of nexium just to function day to day.

The surgeon stands by his performance and has handed me down to a GI doctor.

He mentioned that my symptoms could be caused by slow gastric emptying, I had a barium meal and showed that the barium was not moving through my stomach as fast as it should. I first thought i got full quick and my limited eating was because of the Nissen reduces your stomach size? or at least thats what I heard.

i have noticed the food not moving through compared to before the Op, i used to eat 6 meals before, and was always hungry an hour or so after ( I was working out allot at the gym )

My apetite is there, I am still hungry, But I get full very quickly, I put this down to post op swelling or some other common trait with the healing proccess.

I regret every day having this surgery, I seem to have just swapped an ocasional anoyance with worse reflux, stronger meds, and another cronic condition.

My surgeon has also given me Domperadone to help shift the food, but its usless. I can eat, but not allot, and not too often. If I wake up and have 2 crackers with pate at 7am, By 9am I will be hungry, but my stomach still feels full from breakfast.

IM terrified that i might need medication for life, especialy the serious side effects of these, including worsening heart conditions ( I already have arythmia)

Im even thinking the nexium thatim on is also causing it, btu without the nexium
the acid gets worse.

I seem to have most of the symptoms listed above, apart from the Nausea, and lack of petite.
I feel hungry, but after one bite im litraly almost bursting.

the surgeon seems more than confident that this is the cause of my worse symptoms, and not that he hasnt tightended the wrap tight enough. In honesty, i think its both, i think if the wrap was tighter, the acid and food comeing up would cause more resistance. I mean, i could eat a steak and toast 2 weeks following the operation with no trouble at all, which is virtualy impossible for anyone who has this surgery, I was told i wouldnt be able to burp for up to a year following the Operation. But I was burping fluid up on my 3rd day. i actualy woke from the operation when I burped up lots of acid that came out of my nose.

Im trying to get a second opinion, a specialist from Newcastle, but escovered he doesnt see privatley, so i had to go to GP. I saw the doctor last week asking to be refered and told me because of finances, this probibly wont be possible, She said she would speak to the "boss" and check. she then rang me and told me they need a report from my surgeon first about how my follow apointment went. she said once she gets that she can take it to the Board and they will decide wheather they are willing to refer me to another surgeon so far away. but she said she isnt confident that will happen, because we are in a rescession and the finance.

Oh and I actualy got the idea of reducing my nexium from 80mg to 40mg, wondering if this would reduce my symptoms, i would actualy go to say its about 5% better, but that could be purley placebo. also ive stopped the Domperadol they perscribed me, as I shouldnt even be taking it, and also was making my manxiety levels very high. i havent noticed my digestion getting worse because of th elack of meds, in fact, i can feel myself eating alittle more, especialy since stopping the domperadl. (which is strange)

My acid has increased, but liek you said, that could be rebound.

Im feeling very disheartened at the moment, I've had stomach issues for the last 8 months (about the same time my 24/7 heartburn miraculously disappeared) and the GI's have basically written me off now as I dont have anything 'serious'. I asked them about a slow emptying stomach and he asked if I had ever vomited, which I said no and he basically said well you dont have it then.

I recently started taking domperidone again and noticed a distinct improvement in my symptoms, and I also never eat for 3 hours before bed and sleep on a wedge, since doing this I've never woken up with nausea which has been a great relief.

I'm also pretty convinced that the Carafate is the reason I have been getting bad attacks of stomach pain, when Im on it it pretty much feels like my PPIs have just stopped working after a few days. I am careful to not take it within 2 hours of the PPIs but obviously that isn't enough for me and its interfering so I've given it up completely and am a lot better off for it.

But although the horrible stomach pains are gone, I still can't shake this feeling of abdominal discomfort, I get most relief when I am sat straight up, so going to work and sitting over the keyboard all day greatly relieves my symptoms, but they are always there when Im walking or if I sit on a sofa for too long.

I also have horrible constipation, going at least 2-3 days before each bowel movement and 1 per week isn't uncommon for me. But strangely if I eat even a single carrot I get awful bowel pains and then frequent bowel movements. It was so bad last time when I was walking home that I had to stop and just sit on the street curling up as hard as I could to stop the pain. Its strange because my bowels really dont give me any problems at all except for when I eat even a single (cooked) carrot. Im not sure if there could be a link between this and my stomach problems but for now I have to steer clear.

I've tried slippery elm which seemed to help my stomach but soon after starting it I had the most painful bowel movement I've ever had, it felt like I was passing a cheesegrater. I've not had it before or since. Could have been coincidence so Im thinking of giving the SE another go, after all its supposed to actually help constipation...

although i am sure i suffer from some sort of gastric emptying as residual dammage from the operation. i am sure that this is not the problem alone. as even when i first woke from the operation i did not eat for 7 days because of the servere acid. the symptoms were present long before i injested food of any kind. and for the following month my intake was 1 cup of water for a day. and the symptoms were present. i wasnt consuming enough food or liquid to cause any back up.
