Heys guys hows it going hope you are all doing well,because im doing bad as of currently sadly I am currently suffering from bad chest pain and shortness of breath, about a month ago I was doing fine by take prilosec 20mg but then i also had to take antibiotics for a gum infection which did affect my reflux and gave me severe asthma since then i kept taking the prilosic,felt like it didnt help a couple of days but then felt better in week then I weaned off it thinking I didnt want to rely on it too much but after a week got asthma again and bad chest pain which i never had before since december I switched to nexium to see how it would work out,I've been on it for 5 days and I still feel bad. I'm starting to think its not the reflux but I had like 4 EKGs with no problems so I dont know what to do please help?

Hi

I think you need to go back to your doctor. Think you may need a thorough check up. Think an impedance test would identify any reflux reaching high up in your oespahgus which could be giving you respiratory symptoms. Did you have asthma prior to all this starting?

My asthma was directly related to my GERD. I had trouble breathing and suffered from recurring bronchitis. After my NF in April 2009, I no longer suffer from asthma and haven't had bronchitis. Have you had any tests confirming that you have GERD? You really need to see a gastro doctor and have tests done. Also, when taking PPIs it sometimes takes a while before you feel results. They are not mean to be taken off and on, and you can have rebound symptoms when you stop taking them.

SharonZ that's reassuring to hear that your asthma cleared up after fundo. I'm due to have a redo soon I have to try and remain hopefull that it will help. I never had any respiratory problems prior to all this and I would love to see the end of them. Hope you don't mind me asking, byt what type of asthma stmptoms did you have? Did you have resolution straight away? The respiratory doc I'm under the care of is not ruling asthma in or out and wants to wait til after redo to perform any more tests. Anyway I'm rambling! Thanks

Trotters - It was my pulmonary doctor that suggested I have further testing done. Definitely shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and I had bronchitis 5 times in one year. I had multiple breathing tests and used an inhaler, daily. I have not used an inhaler, had bronchitis, or used reflux medication since my surgery. My pulmonary doctor referred me to a surgeon who specialized in diseases of the esophagus. He was highly recommended, had a lot of NF experience and did my surgery via robotics. It was the best decision I've ever made. I was fortunate that I was a good candidate and had a great surgeon.

Thats really good to hear that you have had resolution of your symptoms. I pray and hope I'm as "lucky" as you after surgery. Sorry one last thing, did your spirometry appear normal and did you have methacholine challenge test performed? Thanks for getting back to me.

That's the bad thing I mean I know its Gerd, but no tests to actually confirm it and since I have no insurance the only thing I have is a physician I gotta wait to get full insurance sadly and how bad is acid rebound and what kind of doctors is specialized in Gerd and LPR?

Acid rebound affects people differently and can last days or weeks. When I was off PPI months ago to have PH testing, it was nearly 3 weeks before I started to feel the relief. For Gerd you need to see GI doctor. In my experience, GI docs tend to brush over LPR and underestimate the severity of its symptoms. Possibly a ENT for LPR. Hope you find some solutions soon.
