Treatment for sore throat and nose due to GERD?

I have been suffering from GERD for months and I constantly have a burning in my throat and my nasopharanx. It has gotten to the point my nose is stuffed up and I have lost my voice. Also, there is a lot of pain.

What can I take to relieve the pain and swelling without increasing my painful GERD symptoms? Lozenges and eucalyptus are out so I am at a lose as to what to try without making the burning worse.

Welcome to Healing Well! Sorry to hear you're struggling. You're in the right place. Have you seen an ENT specialist? It sounds as if your problems are severe enough to require a visit to the GI doctor as well.

I can't give you any specific ideas for treating your specific problems, but I expect someone else will be by soon with some ideas.

I will ask if you're taking any medications to treat your reflux. Also, it would likely be very helpful if you elevate the head of your bed 7-8" to help keep the acid in the stomach with the aid of gravity.

Thank you for responding, Denise! I am feeling so hopeless these days.

I've seen a GI doc for mild to moderate heartburn and he prescribed Pantoprozole 40 mg, which I took for 3 months. My heartburn became extremely severe and started going into my throat and nose. He then gave me Zegerid 40 mg, which I took for a month with no result. It may even have gotten worse.

Now, all I am left with is a constant burning in my chest, throat and nose. I only eat bland foods (oatmeal, mashed potatoes, slices of bread, steamed vegetables).

I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling so awful, Lola12. I hope today finds you feeling a bit better : < I know what you mean when you say you feel hopeless. It's not a fun feeling... neither is constant burning.

I have moderate GERD problems, nowhere near, it sounds, the seriousness of yours. BUT, for what it's worth, I do often get the burning throat/chest feeling and before I went on the medication I am currently on, I was often waking up nauseous and got a hoarse, scratchy throat from reflux through the day.

I find I can get moderate relief from the sore throat by adding a bit of manuka honey to some herbal tea (the tea I have is a pineapple flavor, which does not personally cause me any issues) and chewing sugarless cinnamon gum after each meal. It doesn't stop the problems but I felt like I was at least doing something. Obviously, individual mileage may vary : ) I do not get burning in my nose, so on that point, I unfortunately cannot give you my experiences.

The only thing that has really helped me so far is finding the right medication. Do you have another appointment with your GI lined up as yet?

I will try the cinnamon gum. I heard that chewing gum helps so it's worth a try. Where do you purchase the manuka honey?

I am going to try to see my GI doc again, but I am concerned about whether the PPIs may be making the situation worse or if it is worth it to try panotprazole again since I was not taking it regularly. I only took it as needed due to faulty instructions from a previous doctor who prescribed it to me.

Hi Lola12,

You should be able to purchase Manuka honey at most healthfood stores. I'm not sure where you live but in my neck of the woods Wholefoods Market, Mother's Market, and Sprouts Markets carry Manuka honey.

I also want to second chewing sugarless cinnamon gum after a meal, I have found it beneficial. The brand I buy at Sprouts is called SPRY and I buy it by the case.

Hi again! Agreeing with Peabs on both points! I actually got my Manuka Honey at a Shopper's Drug Mart, which surprised me! But I would imagine health food stores otherwise.

I also buy the Spry Cinnamon gum. They have a citrus and mint flavor, which obviously we'd probably do best to avoid, but I've also seen a green tea flavor and think I might give that a shot eventually. The gum has Xylitol in it, so it's pretty okay for your teeth, as well : ) I got it from a natural foods market, too!

They are a couple of my symptoms too. I don't suffer greatly with heartburn but more respiratory priblems, sore throat, coughing, chest pain. I know exactly the feeling you are on about and I woke up every morning with what you describe. Constant blocked nose and thought was allergies after testing I was found to have none. I still have it bad if I sleep on my right side and on my front flat. Have you tried sleeping with a wedge and the bed propped up? It's the only thing that helps a bit for me. Gravity keeping whatever in my stomach as much as possible. Also there is a guy on here who suffers with LPR, I can't remember his user name he suggests alkaline water as it deactivates the pepsin in your throat which is what is most damaging. I keep a glass by my bed to sip on during the night.
