Demeester score of 118.9

I had my Bravo test and my Demeester score was 118.9. Anyone had a score that high? Surgery scheduled for September 2nd.

That is pretty high... you must have had constant acid reflux episodes, especially when you laid down. I think after the upper high of 14, it all sucks. Mine was only 38 but even at that number, 3 PPIs per day didn't help. I had the surgery on July 31st and I have not had one PPI or reflux since. I feel way better. If you are like me, and with that high of a score, you should be motivated for the surgery. My post surgery diary is here:

I do not want to hijack this thread, yet I would like to ask you what total daily dose did you take?

I'm kinda curious about that too.

I wish you all the best with your surgery, sounds like it will be some much needed relief.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it and kinda nervous about the recovery process also.
This is very new to me. I just turned 30 and my acid reflux started really getting bad after I had my appendix removed in January. The symptoms were not so great but what made me and my doctors decide to go for surgery is the internal damage they discovered during the endoscopy.

I don't know if you were asking sam or I, but I was on Omeprazole 20mg 2x daily with Ranitidine 150mg 1x per day, before bedtime. Even with that, my reflux was still active and I would back it up with some liquid antacid to calm the burning in my esophagus. Of course, at my age (50+), PPIs for an extended length could cause other issues.

Hi Sam,

That is definitely a world-class DeMeester score, so I'm not a bit surprised that you're scheduled for surgery. If GERD is your only troublesome symptom, you will find a new lease on life once you've made it through your early recovery period. You'll look back at your pre-Nissen life and wonder how you managed, and why you didn't get the surgery sooner!

It is important to select a surgeon who is highly experienced in doing the Nissen procedure. If you've done that, you're good to go, and can expect a great outcome.

Your recovery journal and others' posts have been very helpful. The surgeon doing my surgery is very well known for this type of procedures and has performed surgery on me before (appendix) so he know my medical history well. I'm confident I'm in good hands.

One things that had me confused/worried is the recovery seems to be more intense and longer than I was expecting. But I'm still glad I'm doing the surgery. At 30 years old I wasn't looking forward to taking pills the rest of my life and I'm pretty sure symptoms were going to get stronger over time. I'm already having a tough time with acid reflux keeping me up at night and giving me a chronic cough so looking forward to all that being over with.

Question for anyone who can help with. I do take a pretty large pill on a daily basis, I've heard a lot of people using a pill crusher - is that something they provide at the hospital or can I buy it somewhere? I'm pretty sure I won't be able to swallow the pills reading other people's posts on what food they can and cannot swallow.

I would ask your doctor about your medication - some pills are not meant to be crushed and it may be available in another form. The hospital will not provide a pill crusher for you - you can buy them just about anywhere including your pharmacy. I had a full NF wrap last year and never had issues swallowing pills, everyone is different.
