My Fundoplication with Hiatal Hernia repair journey

I can't eat everything on the sample menu at one sitting, but when I decide to have something, I look to the samples for an amount, and then gauge from there. I also eat until I feel like I have to burp or eat what is on my plate. It has been working for me, except for Sunday this past weekend and the gas that I got today.

I have been eating chicken and ground meats for over a week now and have not had any issues, so I don't believe that today was due to the chicken.

I also will eat or should I say drink, the odd replacement meal shake when I need to. Like when I am too hungry to cook, need a snack, or just don't know what to eat. I also eat rice pudding, and lots of toast and peanut butter, oh and eggs.

A little better. Dealing with dizziness when I stand up and move around. Probably a result of low blood pressure due to very little salt in my diet(it happened to me before) and having diarrhea. I didn't receive any relief from the medication. As time progressed my symptoms worsened and it got to the point I was spitting up three or four times a day and barely sleeping because of pain. Plus the results of PH test showed severe reflux and my doctor was concerned that I lost nearly 20 pounds in 2 months without trying. To put it simply I just couldn't cope anymore.

Which medications did you try? Where you on them before surgery or did you stop them when they didn't work?

That's odd, didn't you get even partial relief from them? Ah well at least you've got it sorted now

I had dizzy spells today so I saw my pediatrician. She says because my current diet doesn't contain very much protein, my blood sugar drops quickly, causing dizziness. Don't know why that just started though. So I'm eating Greek yogurt smoothies to help. Plus I'm still having diarrhea so I have to get a stool sample so it can be checked for C Diff. Being on PPI's actually puts me at greater risk of the infection.

The doctor told me dairy is actually good because Greek yogurt has protein and the cheese is "binding". Thanks for your concern though

Great to hear that things are starting to even out a bit now, hopefully this means you are out of the worst part of recovery.

Right, it sounds awful. And I'm finally getting back into the swing of things in school and I feel like a normal teenager again. I'm still eating lots of Greek yogurt for protein so I don't get dizzy again. Today is the 4 week Mark. Do I regret having this surgery? Despite what I said in those early days full of pain, no. I don't regret it. It hasn't been easy but I don't have reflux and I know that will impact me for years to come.

Thats so awesome to hear. Glad things are getting back to normal for you finally. Reading everyones post op stories it seems like the 2-3 week recovery before going back to work/school seems like a gross underestimation.

I've often wondered at times whether I should just stick with the meds that are sort of working, because of the potential problems surgery might create, but then I consider that we're talking say another 50-60 years of dealing with it and thats what makes me think surgery might be the better option. I'm guessing you went through similar thoughts when you were looking into surgery.

Thats fair enough. My hesitation I guess is because I've already had to give so much up for this stupid disease, that I'm worried about making things worse. Though after my appointment with the surgeon I am feeling a bit more optimistic about it.

My son is also 17 and is going to have the TIF procedure for his reflux in two weeks. We are also in NY. can I ask what hospital and surgeon you saw? I am interested because you are doing well and are the same age. I am glad you have made it back to school. My son has no life right now, he's been so ill for 2 years. I hope he does as well as you and can get back to living!
