Finding info about a surgeon

I'm booked in to see a surgeon, Bernd Grunewald, on Friday. I know a lot of people have had surgeons recommended to them by other patients, but this wasn't the case for me, he was recommended by my GI. What I want to know is how have any of you gone about finding out more information about your surgeons?

I had trouble even finding out who did anti-reflux surgery in my region let alone finding out any actual information about the surgeons themselves and I really don't want to go into this without having some kind of information on hand.

I would ask the doctor how many of that type of procedure he/she has done, success rate, and typical complications or side effects of patients afterwards. If you don't like his/her answers, or feel that he/she might not be the one for the job, I would try to find the surgeon in your area that fixes failed cases. I recently saw in another thread, a gentleman was very satisfied with his surgery because he went to the doctor that fixes everyone else's screw-ups, and you can be a lot more confident that doctor is the one that will do it right the first time.

I have googled him already but all I came up with was information about his specialty. He is an approved provider for reflux surgery for my health insurance company so I guess that's something. His specialty is upper GI lapro procedures with gastro and esophageal tumours and GERD surgeries being his main focus. He's been specialising in this area for a decade.

I'm in New Zealand btw.
