Depression after NF surgery

Just wondering if anyone else felt depressed after this surgery? I feel like I wasn't prepared for all of this. Reading these posts have truly given me hope and I wish I had found this before the surgery. For me it happened so fast from diagnosis (1/25/16) to surgery (2/16/16). My pain is manageable so far with occasional set backs. I no longer cough which is a blessing. But I sometimes break down and cry. My husband is a great support but doesn't understand what I am going through. I am returning to work next week after 4 weeks off.

Fortunately, I did not suffer from depression after surgery. Although I can understand how you feel, and you should contact your doctor with your concerns. Perhaps they can prescribe something temporarily help you until you feel more back to normal.

This may not be relevant, but some patients experience depression post-surgery as a result of their pain medication. Many narcotics carry with them side effects related to mood, specifically depression. My mom is recovering from an unrelated surgery and had to change her pain killers as she had relentless bouts of crying and sadness. Now on new pain medication, and only needing very limited amounts of it, she is much better. Anesthesia also takes some time to work through the body, sometimes causing mood issues directly post-surgery.

You should talk with your doctor, though. It could just be the frustration of recovery getting to you. It could be the limited diet. It could be medication. Or it could be a combination. Let us know how it goes!

CG has some good ideas. Pain can cause depression too. It can be PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

Nobody who hasn't gone through this can understand it completely, and even relatives get tired of the complaints. So come here and vent! Lots of us do!

Thank you for your thoughts. I just have to remember it will take time to heal. I am not a patient person as I like to remain active.
I have started (today) to sew again which I love to do. It gives my mind something else to focus on.
I did talk to my surgeon about this but he said give it some time. Major surgery is not something to take lightly. Meds are not an option as I have other health issues that prohibit me from taking them. I am not on pain meds anymore either as I seem to tolerate the pain better now.
Alcie thanks for the venting remark. I really feel safe talking about this new life of mine. I am really glad I happened on this site.
CaliGal I know you are right about the diet and recovery. I am still on liquids with some baby food as well. That in itself is depressing. I have resigned myself to this for awhile longer though. I am determined to be a success story.

Well, Ringer, we can commiserate over our liquid diets as of Friday or so. I'm just starting my darned journey then so will probably look to all of you for the same types of support. I'm not a patient person either -- not at all! I'm a get up and go kind of gal. So the idea of slowing down is a bit daunting. I should have picked up some type of craft that I can do at home. There's only so much TV I'll be able to watch. But, of course, there's always this here site!

Thanks for sharing your depression question and concerns. There are undoubtedly many people where you are now...and probably more of us coming right up behind you. It's a comfort to know that others have been there, done that and then some.
