Having been the ER a total of 7 times in the past 5 years because of GERD, I can assure you that GERD can cause a wide variety of symptoms. And they can vary from person to person.
Depending on which hospital you go to and which doctor you get, will depend on how you are treated. I noticed with emergency rooms, their main focus is to triage, stabilize you, and then discharge you, especially once all your EKGs and bloodwork come back negative.
Very rarely do they actually give you the exam you really need and that's an upper endoscopy or something similar. Most doctors want to give you an H2 blocker or proton pump inhibitor and maybe some carafate and see how you feel in 60 to 90 days.
I ended up in the ER last week because I was in a lot of pain. Though it felt like a heart attack because of the pain in my chest, I knew it was my esophagitis and gastritis acting up again.
The ER doctor prescribed me 20 mg of Pepcid and a 4 day supply of Carafate and it's not doing much. I'm going to go see my gastroenterologist if I don't start to feel better soon.
