Martial arts after Nissen?

Hi everyone , thank you for all the advice and help i have found on this site . I am going for my operation on Tuesday 11th september and have been waiting since October last year ! I have to admit reading your stories have helped me so much .I have been training in the martial arts since the age of 8 in 1978 and have been told that the way i train will have to change .are there any other martial artists who have had this operation? How has it effected your training ?.I will let you know how i get on turn

I am not martial artist but I played soccer before the surgery and play soccer after the surgery. My surgeon always told me I would be able to do everything the way I did before the surgery. Only thing about martial arts in that if you train and get kicked in the stomach, it may cause problems. I hope this helps and good luck with your surgery.

Hi Denise, thank you so much operation went really well and I am now at home , first days I was alittle sore with a sore throat which lasted two days .your posts have helped so much ! I am eating a very soft diet at the moment of soups and jelly and drinking as much as I can so I can pass water. The wounds are healing very nicely and I am pleased at my recovery . Waking up in the morning is difficult as the stiffness makes getting out of bed difficult . I have met so many new friends on the ward and just like to say the staff at Southampton hospital in the UK is amazing . The doctors and staff have been so supportive . Thank you again for your help and advice it is much appreciated ! Thanks so much

Hi James,

I am a martial artist, and really found it difficult to be like water after this. The Nissen scars really made it difficult for me to empty my mind, to be formless, shapeless — like water.

Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash.

It is difficult post-Nissen, but be water, my friend.

Hello James,

I am glad your surgery is behind you.  I wish I had some input re martial arts but the only person I know who is training in martial arts is my 8 year old granddauther. 

I wish you a speedy recovery and also that you will be able to return to martial arts in the future.

Hi all of you ,Thank you all so much :-) i am feeling better and better each day and apart from the odd ache seem to be healing well.I am taking everyday as it comes and my eating pattern and how i eat has changed as all of ours did ....getting used to the changes and of how to deal with things is different now but i am pleased at our i am getting along. Its great having such a great group of people as yourselves to talk with . Thank you all for your posiyive comments and help.

Anyone else has done martial arts post Nissen? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo?

i had 25 years invested in the arts, pre surgery. due to the impact zone of strikes, it was agreed, by me and the surgeon, to cease and desist, the fighting part. i still maintain my flexibility, workout aerobically, kata, you can do. the arts allow, you to tune into your body. listen carefully. this op, can be set back due extreme, and not so extreme physical, work outs. this is one operation, where once, was enough for me.
